Frequently asked questions

How much severance am I entitled to in Uganda?
There is no statutory formula. The amount is negotiable between employer and worker or the union, and a Labour Officer determines it if no agreement is reached.
How long must I have worked to qualify?
Six months or more of continuous service with the same employer — a lower threshold than most of the region.
When does severance arise?
On termination other than for serious misconduct, redundancy, employer insolvency, termination by a Labour Officer for unpaid wages, or unfair termination.
What happens if my employer does not pay?
They commit an offence and pay a fine of twice the amount of severance payable.
Must my termination notice be in writing?
Yes, except for summary dismissal for serious misconduct, and it must state the reason in understandable language.
Does my contract have to be written?
No. Section 25 allows written or oral contracts, but proving your terms is harder without writing.
Is HIV status protected?
Yes, explicitly, alongside colour, race, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction, social origin and disability.
When should terminal benefits be paid?
Within a reasonable time — in practice the final payroll cycle or within 7 to 30 days. Immediately after a Labour Officer’s decision.
Is severance separate from leave pay?
Yes. Severance is distinct from other terminal benefits such as accrued leave, and both are owed.
Is Saplic free to use?
Yes. Creating your profile, searching for jobs and applying costs nothing, now or later. There is no app to install either.
