What is the minimum wage in Trinidad and Tobago?
TT$20.50 per hour, established on 1 January 2024. For a standard 40-hour week that is roughly TT$3,553 per month. It applies to all workers, including migrant workers, unless specifically exempt.
What is the NIS contribution rate in 2026?
The total rate rose to 16.2 % effective 5 January 2026, up from 13.2 %, with a further increase to 19.2 % scheduled for 2027. It is not split evenly between employer and employee.
How much vacation leave am I entitled to?
Fourteen days per year after one year of continuous service, but you must also have worked at least 220 days within that period to qualify.
How long is maternity leave?
Fourteen weeks with guaranteed reinstatement. The employer pays one month at full pay and two months at half pay, with NIS covering a portion.
Does NIS pay unemployment benefit?
No. There is no national unemployment insurance benefit in Trinidad and Tobago.
What do I get paid for working a public holiday?
Double time. Trinidad and Tobago observes seventeen public holidays, one of the highest counts anywhere.
What is the Health Surcharge?
A flat weekly charge of TT$8.25 for most employees. It is not a percentage, so it does not scale with earnings.
What is the Industrial Court?
A dedicated court established under the Industrial Relations Act with powers over industrial disputes, including unfair dismissal and retrenchment.
Am I protected if I work on an oral contract?
Yes. The Industrial Relations Act defines a worker broadly: anyone employed under a contract, written or oral, in exchange for wages or reward.
