Participation in the National Insurance System is mandatory for covered employers and employees in Trinidad and Tobago. It is administered by NIBTT, the National Insurance Board.

The 2026 increase

Effective 5 January 2026, the total NIS contribution rate rose to 16.2 %, up from 13.2 %. It is part of a phased reform intended to improve the system's financial sustainability.

A further increase to 19.2 % is scheduled for 2027.

It is not split evenly

This is where foreign-managed operations frequently get caught out. The 16.2 % is not divided fifty-fifty between employer and employee — the split is defined, and applying a flat even division produces incorrect contributions.

NIBTT has flagged employers for exactly this error.

The band system

Contributions are calculated on earnings bands, not as a straight percentage of any salary. Your contribution depends on which band your weekly or monthly earnings fall into.

That structure means the deduction does not move smoothly with every pay change — it steps.

What NIS covers

  • Retirement pension
  • Sickness benefit
  • Maternity benefit, which covers part of maternity leave pay
  • Employment injury benefit
  • Survivors benefit and funeral grant

What it does not cover

Worth knowing plainly: there is no national unemployment insurance benefit in Trinidad and Tobago. If you lose your job, NIS does not pay you while you look for another.

Check your record

You can verify your contribution record with NIBTT. The deduction appearing on your payslip does not by itself prove the money was remitted.

Gaps in your record affect your pension entitlement, and the time to find them is now rather than at retirement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NIS contribution rate in 2026?
The total rate rose to 16.2 % effective 5 January 2026, up from 13.2 %. A further increase to 19.2 % is scheduled for 2027.
Is the rate split evenly between employer and employee?
No. The split is defined and applying a flat even division produces incorrect contributions. NIBTT has flagged employers for exactly this error.
How are contributions calculated?
On earnings bands rather than as a straight percentage. Your contribution depends on which band your earnings fall into, so the deduction steps rather than moving smoothly.
Does NIS pay unemployment benefit?
No. There is no national unemployment insurance benefit in Trinidad and Tobago. NIS covers pension, sickness, maternity, employment injury and survivors benefits.
How do I check my contributions are being paid?
Verify your record with NIBTT. The deduction on your payslip does not by itself prove the money was remitted, and gaps affect your pension.
