Frequently asked questions

How much do I contribute to SSNIT?
Tier 1 is 13% from the employer and 5.5% from you, both calculated on basic salary rather than total compensation. Tier 2 adds 5% of gross, employer-funded.
What is Tier 2 and where is it held?
A mandatory occupational scheme of 5% of gross salary, held by a privately managed approved trustee rather than SSNIT. Ask your employer which trustee holds yours.
How much notice am I owed?
One month for contracts of three years or more, two weeks for contracts under three years, and seven days for week-to-week contracts.
How much severance is owed on redundancy?
At least two weeks’ salary per year of service, plus accrued leave pay. Better terms are often negotiated in contracts or collective agreements.
What must an employer do before making redundancies?
Notify the Chief Labour Officer in writing with reasons, numbers and timing, and consult the trade union on measures to avert or minimise terminations.
Can my employer pay me instead of giving leave?
No. Annual leave cannot be waived or replaced by cash except upon termination of employment.
Is there a statutory overtime rate?
No. Act 651 requires employers to establish overtime rates before requiring overtime work. The common 1.5x figure is practice rather than a statutory floor.
Does my contract have to be in writing?
Yes. Failing to issue a written contract for longer engagements is one of the most common breaches of Act 651.
Where do I take an unfair dismissal claim?
The National Labour Commission, which handles mediation and arbitration and may award reinstatement or compensation.
Is Saplic free to use?
Yes. Creating your profile, searching for jobs and applying costs nothing, now or later. There is no app to install either.
