When am I entitled to severance in Belize?
After five years of continuous employment. Five to ten years gives one week’s wages per year; more than ten years gives two weeks’ wages per year.
Does severance cover my notice period?
No. Many employers assume it does, which is incorrect. Both are owed separately.
Can my employer offset severance against my pension?
Generally not. A 2025 Caribbean Court of Justice ruling confirmed severance is a statutory right that cannot be subsumed by a private pension plan unless the plan specifically accounts for it.
How much annual leave do I get?
Two weeks after completing one year of continuous service. Vacation pay must reach you no later than the day before the leave begins.
How much sick leave am I entitled to?
Sixteen working days in a 12-month period, if you have worked at least 60 days for the same employer within the last 12 months.
How long is maternity leave?
Fourteen weeks fully paid, with two weeks before and seven weeks after confinement being mandatory. Eligibility requires 150 days of employment in the preceding 12 months.
What is the standard work week?
It cannot exceed 45 hours, with a nine-hour day — or eight hours in the retail sector. Overtime is 1.5 times the ordinary rate.
Which days are paid at double time?
Good Friday, Easter Monday and Christmas Day must be compensated at two times the ordinary rate.
When must I receive a written statement of my terms?
Within 14 days of starting. It must detail pay, hours and job title.
