The Labour Act sets clear limits on working time in Belize, with an unusual detail about certain holidays.
The standard week
The standard work week cannot exceed 45 hours, and the standard workday cannot exceed nine hours — or eight hours for those in the retail sector.
Overtime
Employees working more than the maximum per day or per week are entitled to overtime pay at 1.5 times their ordinary rate.
Rest days and public holidays
Employees who work on an assigned rest day — usually Sunday — or on a standard public holiday are also entitled to overtime pay.
The three double-time days
Here is the detail specific to Belize. Work performed on:
- Good Friday
- Easter Monday
- Christmas Day
must be compensated at two times the ordinary rate — not the standard 1.5.
If you worked one of those three days and were paid at time and a half, that was short.
