The Labour Act of 2000, Chapter 297, consolidated and modernised Belize's labour laws into a single framework, and it is specific about documentation.
The 14-day rule
Within 14 days of starting, an employee must receive a written statement detailing the key terms of employment, including pay, hours and job title.
If you have been working longer than that with nothing in writing, ask for it. It is a statutory requirement.
When a written contract is mandatory
Both written and oral contracts are recognised, but a written contract is mandatory where:
- Employment exceeds three months
- Work occurs partly outside Belize
- Terms differ from industry norms
Contracts must be attested by a Labour Officer within 7 days.
Automatic probation
Under section 29A of the Labour Act, the first two weeks of employment are automatically considered a probation period. Probation can extend from two weeks up to six months.
You do not need to agree to probation for it to apply to that initial period — it is automatic.
