All employers in Belize are required to register with the Social Security Board for employees aged 14 to 65.

What it covers

SSB contributions fund a range of benefits:

  • Sickness
  • Maternity
  • Injury at work
  • Retirement pensions

The pension system

The Belizean pension framework includes an Old-Age Pension among its components, administered through the Social Security system.

The remittance deadline

Employers must remit contributions by the 14th of each month for the prior period.

Late or incorrect SSB payments attract penalties and interest.

How sick pay interacts with Social Security

Where you are entitled to both, the structure is layered: the first 3 days at your normal wage rate, the following 13 days at the difference between the Social Security entitlement and your normal wages, and thereafter only the Social Security entitlement.

Understanding that layering explains why sick pay amounts change partway through an absence.

Lawful deductions

Only legal deductions are allowed: SSB, income tax, or those with written employee consent.

Anything else should be questioned.

Wages must be paid in Belize Dollars

Wages are paid in Belize Dollars, directly to employees.

Payment on termination

Upon termination, all wages due are payable immediately.

Social security contributions must be current through the final pay period.

Verify your record

A deduction appearing on your payslip does not prove the employer remitted it to the SSB. Check your record directly.

Gaps affect your access to sickness, maternity, injury and retirement benefits — the things you need precisely when you cannot easily chase them.

If contributions are missing

Raise it with the employer, and if unresolved, with the Ministry of Labour. Late or incorrect payments carry penalties for the employer.
