  • Board Member, Volunteer, Hybrid Work from Home
  • Housing and Homelessness, Operations and Risk Management
  • Not For Profit (NFP)

About the Role

The Non-Member Director brings independent judgment, objective scrutiny, and possible specialised commercial expertise to the Board. Unlike Member Directors, this role represents no individual tenant interest. The successful candidate ensures the co-operative remains financially viable, legally compliant, and strategically aligned with its mission to provide stable, affordable community housing in accordance with the Co-operatives National Law (Victoria) and Victorian housing legislation. We host 10 meetings per year on a Tuesday morning and the new non member Director may attend some of these meetings online.

About us:

We are a small housing co-operative established in 1983 with 66 homes we manage. The majority of our social housing is owned by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing. Our Board is a diverse and small group of passionate renter members who have a range of lived and professional experiences. The Board makes decisions that affect all members of the co-operative so prudent and wise counsel is needed to ensure the co-operative remains a viable organisation.

Key Selection Criteria (Skills & Experience)

  • Core Professional Expertise: Proven experience in at least one key domain: Social Housing/Property Management, Corporate Law, Community Governance, or Financial Management.
  • Governance Literacy: Prior experience or aspirations to have experience serving on a board, with a clear understanding of director duties, liabilities, and the distinction between governance and operations.
  • Values Alignment: A demonstrable commitment to social justice, affordable housing, and the international principles of co-operation.
  • Communication & Ethics: Exceptional interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and a track record of upholding high ethical and behavioural standards.
  • Geelong/Regional Knowledge (Desirable): Understanding of the local Geelong housing market, community needs, or local government networks.
