How do I know whether federal or provincial rules apply to me?
By industry. Banks, telecommunications, broadcasting, airlines, interprovincial transport and federal Crown corporations are federally regulated. Most other workplaces follow provincial standards.
Is statutory notice all I am entitled to?
No. It is the floor. Where your contract does not properly limit termination entitlements, common-law reasonable notice applies and is almost always higher.
Which province has statutory severance on top of notice?
Ontario, for eligible long-service employees at larger organisations, up to 26 weeks. No other province has a statutory severance requirement.
What do federally regulated employees get?
Notice or wages in lieu after three months, plus separate statutory severance after 12 months, and an unjust-dismissal remedy that can include reinstatement.
What is the CPP rate for 2026?
Five point nine five per cent for employee and employer, on maximum contributory earnings of $71,100, for a maximum annual contribution of $4,230.45.
Are CPP and EI deducted from severance?
No. Severance and retiring allowances attract income tax but not CPP or EI, because employment has ended.
When must my employer issue the ROE?
Within five calendar days after the end of the pay period in which the interruption of earnings occurs. Without it you cannot claim EI.
When should I apply for EI?
Within four weeks of your last day. You can apply before the ROE arrives if your employer is slow.
What changed for illness leave in 2026?
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba extended personal illness and injury leave to 27 weeks effective 1 January 2026, aligning with federal standards.
