How to hire a warehouse assistant
Describe the physical demands
The typical weights lifted, the temperature of the warehouse and the hours spent standing should be stated in the advert. Candidates who know the conditions in advance are far less likely to leave in the first week.
Test counting and attention
A simple practical exercise, such as picking ten items from a list with similar codes, quickly shows accuracy. Errors between nearly identical product codes are the commonest cause of wrong deliveries.
Verify the forklift certificate
Where the role involves a forklift, the certificate or licence should be seen and checked for validity before the start date, and a short practical assessment arranged. An unqualified operator is a serious safety and legal risk.
Prioritise punctuality and attendance
An absent warehouse assistant delays every order of the day. The first thing to ask a former supervisor is how many days the candidate missed and how often they arrived late.
Check references on honesty
Warehouse staff have direct access to stock. A brief call to former supervisors about trustworthiness, together with clear stock controls from the first day, protects the business and the honest employee alike.

Frequently asked questions
What are the requirements for a warehouse assistant in Nigeria?
The most common ones in vacancies are: SSCE (WAEC or NECO) or equivalent; six months to one year of experience in a warehouse, store or distribution centre; good numeracy and the ability to read labels, codes and delivery documents accurately.
Is experience needed to hire a warehouse assistant?
For basic receiving, picking and packing, a reliable and careful person can be trained in a few weeks. Experience matters more where the warehouse uses a scanning system, handles fragile or regulated goods, or requires forklift operation, for which a valid certificate is normally essential.
What reduces staff turnover among warehouse assistants?
Clear information about the conditions before hiring, proper induction and safety training, fair and predictable shift rosters, and a visible path to roles such as forklift operator or team leader. Most early departures come from surprises about the physical workload or the working hours.
How much does it cost to advertise warehouse assistant vacancies on Saplic?
Nothing. Posting the vacancy is free and no credit card is required. The recruitment system for organising the people who apply is free as well.
