How to hire a civil engineer
Confirm the professional registration
Where the law requires registration to sign designs or supervise works, the status should be verified directly with the professional body. Lapsed or false registration exposes the company to legal and insurance problems.
Distinguish design from site roles
A design engineer and a site engineer use different skills and enjoy different days. The advert should state the proportion of office and site work, since many candidates strongly prefer one of the two.
Ask about comparable projects
Experience on houses does not transfer automatically to roads or multi-storey structures. The interview should explore the type, size and contract value of past projects, and the exact responsibility held.
Probe a real site problem
Asking how the candidate dealt with a failed concrete test or an error in setting out reveals technical judgement and integrity. Engineers who have never faced a problem have probably not carried responsibility.
Assess authority with contractors
A site engineer must reject poor work from foremen who may have decades more experience. References should confirm that the candidate can be firm and respectful in equal measure.

Frequently asked questions
What are the requirements for a civil engineer in Nigeria?
The most common ones in vacancies are: degree in civil engineering from a recognised institution; registration or licence with the professional engineering body, as required in the country; three or more years of experience in design or site supervision on comparable projects.
Does a small construction company need a full-time civil engineer?
When the company runs projects continuously, a full-time engineer improves quality, reduces rework and manages contractors far better than occasional visits can. For a single small project, a consultant engineer engaged for design approval and periodic inspections may be enough, subject to what local regulations require.
How much experience should a site engineer have?
For independent responsibility on a site, several years on comparable projects is a reasonable expectation. Recent graduates can be excellent hires when they work under a senior engineer who reviews their decisions. The important point is not to leave an inexperienced engineer alone with structural or contractual responsibility.
How much does it cost to advertise civil engineer vacancies on Saplic?
Nothing. Posting the vacancy is free and no credit card is required. The recruitment system for organising the people who apply is free as well.
