Support the mental health and wellbeing of Australia’s creative community.

Hey Mate is expanding our national clinical team and is seeking experienced psychologists and counsellors to provide industry-specific therapeutic support to people working across Australia’s creative industries.

This is an opportunity to provide meaningful, flexible clinical work within a purpose-led social enterprise that understands the distinct realities of creative careers.

About Hey Mate

Hey Mate is a social enterprise dedicated to improving mental health and wellbeing across Australia’s creative industries.

We work with artists, musicians, performers, production crews, freelancers, arts workers, creative organisations, festivals, peak bodies and government partners.

Our services include:

  • Industry-specific counselling and psychological support
  • Employee Assistance Programs
  • Subsidised and community-funded mental health services
  • Workplace wellbeing programs
  • Workshops, training and sector-wide initiatives
  • Community Programs

Our clients may experience the common challenges of creative work, including insecure employment, financial uncertainty, irregular hours, touring, burnout, isolation, public scrutiny, workplace stress and the emotional demands of sustaining a creative career.

We believe people working in creative industries deserve support from clinicians who understand their world.

About the opportunity

As a contract clinician with Hey Mate, you will provide confidential telehealth support to adult clients referred through our intake team.

Clients may access support through Hey Mate’s:

  • Private counselling services
  • Government and community-funded programs
  • Subsidised and hardship support pathways
  • Creative industry wellbeing projects

You can nominate your availability, referral capacity, areas of practice and preferred client presentations.

Depending on your interests and experience, there may also be opportunities to contribute to workshops, group programs, industry resources and broader wellbeing initiatives.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-informed therapeutic support via telehealth
  • Deliver short-term, person-centred and solution-focused interventions
  • Complete clinical assessments, treatment planning and case documentation
  • Undertake risk assessments and safety planning when required
  • Identify and make appropriate referrals to additional or specialist services
  • Work collaboratively with Hey Mate’s Intake and Practice team
  • Maintain professional, ethical and confidentiality standards
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive and culturally responsive service

About you

You will be a fully qualified and experienced clinician with a genuine understanding of, connection to or interest in Australia’s creative industries.

Psychologists

To be considered as a psychologist, you will have:

  • Current general or endorsed registration with AHPRA
  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications in psychology
  • Experience providing psychological support to adults
  • Strong clinical assessment and risk-management skills
  • Current professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Confidence working independently through telehealth
  • Strong written documentation and communication skills

Psychologists who are eligible to provide Medicare-funded services or are open to supporting bulk-billed and subsidised programs are strongly encouraged to apply.

Counsellors

To be considered as a counsellor, you will have:

  • A recognised tertiary qualification in counselling
  • Current registration with PACFA or ACA
  • Demonstrated experience providing therapeutic support to adults
  • Strong assessment, documentation and risk-management skills
  • A strong professional background in, connection to or understanding of the creative industries

Experience we value

We would particularly love to hear from clinicians with experience in:

  • Supporting artists, musicians, performers and creative professionals
  • Anxiety, depression, burnout and stress
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Workplace mental health and psychosocial safety
  • Neurodiversity-affirming practice
  • LGBTQIA+ inclusive care
  • Alcohol and other drug support
  • Grief, loss and life transitions
  • Supporting freelancers and people experiencing insecure work
  • Regional, rural and remote mental health
  • EAP and brief-intervention services
  • Medicare, bulk-billing or subsidised service delivery

Why work with Hey Mate?

  • Flexible, remote contract work
  • Referrals coordinated by our intake team
  • Clients matched to your expertise, interests and availability
  • Administrative and practice support
  • Meaningful work with a distinct and highly engaged community
  • Opportunities to contribute beyond individual client work
  • A warm, collaborative and values-led team
  • The opportunity to help build a healthier and more sustainable creative sector

Contractors can nominate the number of referrals they are able to accept. Referral volume will vary according to client demand, clinical experience, location and funded program requirements.

Our commitment to inclusion

Hey Mate supports people from across the diverse communities that make up Australia’s creative sector.

We warmly encourage applications from First Nations clinicians, culturally and racially diverse clinicians, LGBTQIA+ clinicians, clinicians with disability and people with lived or professional experience in the creative industries.

How to apply

Please submit:

  • Your current CV
  • A brief cover letter outlining your clinical experience and interest in Hey Mate
  • Details of your professional registration or peak-body membership
  • Your general availability and preferred referral capacity
  • A short overview of your experience within, alongside or supporting the creative industries

If shortlisted, you may also be asked to provide:

  • Evidence of your professional registration.
  • A current Working with Children Check (where applicable).
