The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) is a statutory organization established by the Water Resources Act of 2013 to regulate and manage Malawi’s water resources. The Authority promotes sustainable water resource utilization while addressing planning, development, and management challenges across the country.

  • Job Summary

The National Water Resources Authority is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Director of Water Resources Management and Development. The successful candidate will lead the management and development of water resources and catchments across Malawi.

  • Key Responsibilities
  • Develop directorate plans, programmes, projects, and budgets.
  • Formulate, implement, and monitor water resources management and development strategies.
  • Lead the development of water resources technical specifications, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Mobilize resources through technical guidance to strengthen the Authority's resource base.
  • Lead the establishment and management of water catchments.
  • Develop and implement monitoring mechanisms for sustainable water quality and quantity.
  • Represent NWRA on technical matters as delegated by the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Review inspection reports and recommend appropriate action.
  • Monitor and certify installation of water equipment and infrastructure.
  • Monitor the performance of water sub-sectors against agreed standards.
  • Serve as liaison between Kamuzu Barrage stakeholders and the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Identify risks related to water resource management and recommend mitigation measures.
  • Lead implementation of the Performance Management System (PMS).
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Requirements
  • Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Water Resource Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in a managerial position in water resources management.
  • Experience in developing and managing systems, structures, procedures, and regulations for sustainable water resource management.
  • Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization and utilization.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, monitoring, and financial control.
  • Registration as a Water Engineer will be an added advantage.

  • Knowledge of modern water resource management models.
  • Project management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Remuneration
  • Three-year performance-based contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance.
  • Attractive salary, benefits, and gratuity package commensurate with qualifications and experience.
