Who Are We
The River Nile Learning Centre (RNLC) is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a free and safe learning space for women from refugee, asylum seeker and migrant backgrounds to build skills, confidence and independence. Many of our students are unable to access formal education or employment programs due to age, visa status or personal circumstances. RNLC offers foundation English, numeracy and digital literacy classes alongside food relief, transport cards, wellbeing activities and social support. Our flexible, trauma-informed approach ensures we meet the individual needs of each student and their families.
Your Impact
As Bookkeeper at the River Nile Learning Centre, you play a vital role in ensuring RNLC's finances are accurate, compliant and well managed. Your work underpins the organisation's financial integrity, from day-to-day transactions through to statutory reporting and Board-level financial oversight, giving the General Manager, Board and funders confidence in RNLC's financial health and accountability.
The Role
The Bookkeeper is responsible for RNLC's ongoing financial administration, payroll and statutory reporting obligations. Working closely with the General Manager, you will manage bank reconciliations, payroll and superannuation, BAS and IAS lodgements, job/grant allocations, Board financial reporting, and year-end preparation for RNLC's external Accountant. This role requires current registration as a BAS Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB), along with strong bookkeeping expertise and confidence working across MYOB, the ATO Business Portal and Microsoft 365.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and address finance-related emails and reconcile bank feeds weekly (MYOB and Outlook).
- Process fortnightly wages and Pay Day Super, ensuring wages are reported to the ATO via Single Touch Payroll (STP) through MYOB.
- Process and pay bills fortnightly in line with approved invoices and correspondence.
- Prepare and lodge monthly Instalment Activity Statements (IAS) via the ATO Portal, checking STP data matches MYOB records.
- Allocate income and expenditure to jobs and grants monthly in MYOB, in line with SharePoint forecasting and the Grants mastersheet.
- Prepare and lodge quarterly Business Activity Statements (BAS) via the ATO Portal.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly Board Reports, including Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss statements from MYOB, for circulation via Microsoft 365.
- Manage annual compliance requirements, including Workcover renewal, Payment Summaries and FBT-related reporting (allocating item 57a from the FBT report each April).
- Support year-end processes: prepare reports and complete due diligence checks for RNLC's external Accountant, and align and roll over MYOB accounts to match the Accountant's financial statements.
- Generate invoices for grant funders as required, in line with the Grants mastersheet.
- Maintain accurate, well-organised financial records and back up all reports to SharePoint by year and month.
- Complete other ad hoc bookkeeping, reporting or reconciliation tasks as required, including prior-year reporting and current-year estimates.
- Identify and escalate any financial risks, discrepancies or compliance concerns to the General Manager in a timely way.
Skills and Attributes
- Current registration as a BAS Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) is required.
- Proven bookkeeping experience, ideally including payroll, BAS/IAS lodgement and not-for-profit or grant-funded environments.
- Proficiency in MYOB, Microsoft 365 (including SharePoint) and the ATO Business Portal.
- Sound understanding of GST, payroll, superannuation, STP, FBT and other statutory obligations.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly when reconciling accounts and preparing statutory reports.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage recurring tasks across weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly and annual cycles.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and meet statutory deadlines.
- Discretion and professionalism when handling confidential financial information.
- Ability to work respectfully and effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Dependability and a consistent commitment to the role.
Requirements
- Current BAS Agent registration with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) – required.
- Relevant bookkeeping or accounting qualification (e.g. Certificate IV in Bookkeeping and Accounting) desirable.
- Completion of a Working with Children Check (WWC).
