How is severance calculated in Guyana?
One week’s wages per completed year for the first five years, two weeks per year from the sixth to the tenth, and three weeks per year beyond ten — capped at 52 weeks.
How long must I work to qualify for severance?
One or more years of continuous employment with the same employer.
What happens if my employer does not pay severance?
They face a fine of $31,250 and up to one year’s imprisonment on summary conviction, and the court must additionally order payment of the allowance itself.
How much notice am I owed?
Two weeks for less than one year of service and one month for a year or more. Notice cannot be given while you are on authorised leave.
Is sick leave a legal entitlement?
Not under labour legislation. The NIS sickness benefit pays from the third day at 70% of your wage for up to 26 weeks.
How long is maternity leave?
Thirteen weeks, extendable by a further 13 where there are complications, paid by NIS at 70% of average weekly insurable earnings.
How much annual leave do I get?
Around two weeks — 12 working days — after one year of continuous service. Energy sector employers often offer considerably more.
Is there a national minimum wage?
No. Minimum wage structures are sector-specific rather than universal.
What is the tax-free threshold?
The first GYD 140,000 a month from 2026, with PAYE at 25% and 35% above that.
