How to hire a cleaner

Check references thoroughly
Cleaners frequently work alone, outside business hours, with access to offices, equipment and personal belongings. A direct conversation with former employers about honesty and reliability is the most important step of the selection.

Give exact hours and location
Cleaning shifts tend to be very early or late, and transport at those hours can be difficult. Stating the schedule and the location precisely prevents candidates from accepting and then not turning up.

Define the areas and tasks
A written list of areas, frequencies and tasks avoids misunderstandings about what is included, such as windows, kitchens or outdoor areas. It also makes later supervision fair and objective.

Hold a short practical trial
Asking the candidate to clean a toilet or an office for twenty minutes shows method, thoroughness and care with products. The corners, the handles and the order of work tell the story.

Provide training in chemicals
Mixing cleaning products incorrectly can be dangerous. Even experienced cleaners should receive a brief induction on the products, dilutions and protective equipment used on the site.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements for a cleaner in Canada?

The most common ones in vacancies are: basic schooling, with the ability to read product labels and follow written instructions; six months of experience in commercial, institutional or domestic cleaning; training can be provided; knowledge of cleaning products, colour-coded cloths and basic hygiene practices.

Is it better to employ a cleaner directly or to use a cleaning company?

A cleaning company supplies cover for absences, supervision and materials, which suits larger premises. Direct employment costs less for small sites and builds loyalty and familiarity with the place. The decision normally depends on the size of the premises and on how much management time is available.

Does a cleaner need previous experience?

For general office cleaning, a careful and reliable person can be trained within days. Experience and specific training become necessary in clinics, food premises and industrial sites, where disinfection protocols, chemical handling and waste segregation follow strict rules that cannot be learnt informally.
