Role summary
A mechanic inspects, services and repairs vehicles or machinery so that they run safely and reliably. The role diagnoses faults in engines, brakes, transmissions, suspension and electrical systems, and carries out scheduled maintenance before problems appear. For a workshop, a correct first-time diagnosis keeps customers returning; for a fleet or a factory, it keeps vehicles and equipment earning instead of standing idle.
Main duties
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using diagnostic scanners, test equipment and road tests
- Carry out scheduled services, including oil, filters, fluids, belts and safety inspections
- Repair or replace brakes, clutches, suspension, steering and exhaust components
- Overhaul engines, gearboxes and differentials, following the manufacturer's specifications and torque settings
- Inspect vehicles or equipment against a checklist and report any defect that affects safety
- Explain the work required and its urgency to customers or supervisors in plain language
- Record parts used, labour time and work performed on the job card for each repair
- Keep tools, lifts and the workshop bay clean, calibrated and in safe working order
- Dispose of used oil, batteries and parts according to environmental and workshop rules
Typical requirements
- Technical or vocational qualification in motor vehicle or mechanical maintenance, or a completed apprenticeship
- Two or more years of experience in a workshop, dealership, fleet or maintenance department
- Competent use of diagnostic scanners and the ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams
- Knowledge of gas and diesel engines; experience with hybrid or electric systems is an advantage
- Valid driving licence for road testing and vehicle recovery
- Own basic hand tools, where this is customary in the trade

How to hire a mechanic
Specify vehicles or machinery
Light vehicles, heavy trucks, motorcycles and industrial machinery each require different experience. The advert should name the makes or the types of equipment, since a diesel truck specialist and a small-car mechanic are not interchangeable.
Use a practical diagnostic test
A vehicle with a known fault, and thirty minutes to find it, separates mechanics who diagnose from those who replace parts until the problem disappears. The second kind is expensive to employ.
Ask about diagnostic equipment
Modern vehicles cannot be repaired without scanners and wiring diagrams. Candidates should be able to describe reading live data and fault codes, not merely clearing them.
Check comeback rates in references
The most useful question for a former workshop manager is how often the work of the candidate came back unresolved. Speed matters, but repeated repairs destroy the margin and the reputation of a workshop.
Clarify the tools policy
In many markets mechanics bring their own hand tools while the workshop provides the special equipment. Stating the expectation in advance avoids an awkward conversation on the first day.
Interview questions for mechanic roles
How would you diagnose an engine that started but ran roughly?
What to look for: A logical sequence: fault codes, fuel, ignition, air and compression, before replacing any part.
Could you describe the hardest fault you have diagnosed and how you found it?
What to look for: Method and persistence, with use of data and diagrams instead of guesswork.
What would you do if you found a serious safety defect that the customer had not asked about?
What to look for: Informs the customer or supervisor clearly and records it, even if the repair is declined.
What would you do if you realised you had made a mistake on a repair already delivered?
What to look for: Admits it immediately and arranges for the vehicle to be recalled and corrected.
Which diagnostic tools have you used, and what do you look at beyond fault codes?
What to look for: Live data, freeze-frame information and actual tests to confirm the diagnosis.
How have you managed several vehicles promised for the same day?
What to look for: Prioritizes with the supervisor, orders parts early and warns about delays in good time.
What experience do you have with electrical faults and wiring diagrams?
What to look for: Comfort with a multimeter and tracing circuits, not only mechanical components.
How do you make sure that a brake repair is safe before releasing the vehicle?
What to look for: Torque checks, bleeding, visual inspection and a road test every time.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a mechanic earn in Canada?
The median of the jobs posted on Saplic over the last 6 months is C$ 5,623 per month, and the typical range runs from C$ 5,190 to C$ 6,362. It is a market benchmark, not an official figure.
What are the requirements for a mechanic in Canada?
The most common ones in vacancies are: technical or vocational qualification in motor vehicle or mechanical maintenance, or a completed apprenticeship; two or more years of experience in a workshop, dealership, fleet or maintenance department; competent use of diagnostic scanners and the ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams.
Is formal training necessary for a mechanic, or is experience enough?
Many good mechanics learnt through years in a workshop. Formal training, however, is increasingly important because modern vehicles depend on electronics and diagnostics. The ideal candidate combines both. A practical test settles the question better than any certificate or any number of years claimed.
When does a company with vehicles need its own mechanic?
When the fleet is large enough that vehicles regularly wait for an external workshop, or when breakdowns interrupt deliveries. An in-house mechanic carries out preventive maintenance on schedule, reduces downtime and controls repair costs. Smaller fleets are generally better served by a trusted external workshop.
How much does it cost to advertise mechanic vacancies on Saplic?
Nothing. Posting the vacancy is free and no credit card is required. The recruitment system for organizing the people who apply is free as well.
