Botswana does not operate a single national statutory minimum wage. Instead, minimum wages are set by sector-specific guidelines determined by the Ministry of Employment, Labour Productivity and Skills Development.

How the sectors work

A general hourly minimum applies across sectors including building, construction, wholesale and distributive trades, manufacturing, hotel and catering, and security guards.

But retail trade, domestic service and agriculture have different rates. If you work in one of those, the general figure is not yours.

Because rates are set by sector and revised periodically, confirm the current figure for your sector with the Ministry rather than relying on a published general number.

Working hours

The standard working week is 48 hours, arranged one of two ways:

  • Maximum 9 hours per day on a five-day week
  • Maximum 8 hours per day on a six-day week

Employer contributions

Employers contribute roughly 5% in payroll taxes, covering social security, health care and other statutory benefits.

Why your pension status matters for pay planning

Because severance is not payable to employees receiving a pension or gratuity, your pension arrangement has a direct financial consequence at termination.

That is not an argument against pension — a pension is generally the stronger long-term position — but it means you should know which applies to you rather than assuming you will receive both.

What to check on your payslip

  1. That your basic pay is stated separately, since severance is calculated on it
  2. That your rate meets the minimum for your sector
  3. That deductions are only those authorised by law or by written agreement
  4. That overtime, where worked, is paid

Deductions

Employers may only deduct amounts authorised by law or by written agreement, such as loan repayments or uniforms owed. Anything else should be questioned.

Keep your payslips

Severance is calculated on basic pay across completed months of service. Your payslips are the evidence of both.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a national minimum wage in Botswana?
No single national statutory minimum. Minimum wages are set by sector-specific guidelines determined by the Ministry of Employment, Labour Productivity and Skills Development.
Do all sectors have the same rate?
No. Retail trade, domestic service and agriculture have different rates from the general figure that covers construction, manufacturing, hotel and catering and others.
What is the standard working week?
Forty-eight hours, arranged as a maximum of 9 hours per day on a five-day week or 8 hours per day on a six-day week.
What deductions can my employer make?
Only amounts authorised by law or by written agreement, such as loan repayments or uniforms owed. Anything else should be questioned.
Why should I check my basic pay figure?
Because severance is calculated on basic pay across completed months of service, so that figure and your payslips are the evidence of what you are owed.
