How is severance calculated in The Bahamas?
Two weeks’ pay per year for non-managerial staff, capped at 24 weeks. Managerial and supervisory staff receive one month per year, capped at 48 weeks.
How long must I work to qualify for severance?
Generally at least 12 months of continuous service, unless dismissed for cause.
Is The Bahamas an at-will jurisdiction?
No. Employers must have a valid reason for terminating an employee, and discrimination or retaliation are prohibited.
What can the Industrial Tribunal order?
Reinstatement, re-engagement or compensation of up to 26 weeks’ additional pay, on top of severance and notice already owed.
What must pay in lieu of notice include?
The full wage package — base salary plus housing allowance, vehicle allowance and regular benefits. Base salary alone is a short payment.
What is the minimum wage?
Two hundred and sixty dollars per week under the Employment Act 2001.
What is the NIB contribution ceiling?
It was $810 weekly through 30 June 2026, rising to $830 from 1 July 2026.
Can my employer rehire me as a contractor after redundancy?
The 2017 amendment deems that employment if it happens within 12 months for the same work, unless the terms are more favourable to the worker.
What happens to my accrued vacation?
It must be paid on termination regardless of the reason for leaving.
