Employees with at least two years of continuous service, where employment ends for a qualifying reason such as redundancy, lay-off or short-time, or natural disaster.
How is severance calculated?
Two and a half weeks’ basic pay per year up to 10 years, three weeks per year from 10 to 20, and three and a half weeks per year from 20 to 33, using the 104-week average wage.
What if my employer does not pay severance?

How much notice am I owed?
One week under 2 years of service, 2 weeks from 2 to 5, 4 weeks from 5 to 10, 6 weeks from 10 to 15, and 10 weeks at 15 years or more.
Can I get the reason for my dismissal in writing?
Yes, if you have at least one year of continuous service. You have the right to a written statement of the reason upon request.
How much do I contribute to NIS?
Eleven per cent of insurable earnings. The employer contributes 12.75% plus a 1.5% Health Service Contribution.
Does NIS pay unemployment benefit?
Yes. Barbados has an unemployment benefit funded through NIS, which many Caribbean systems do not.
