How to hire a logistics coordinator

Define domestic or international scope
Coordinating local deliveries with an in-house fleet is a different job from managing imports through customs. Each needs specific knowledge, and the advert should make clear which of them the role involves.

Present a real disruption scenario
A case in which a vehicle breaks down with urgent orders on board shows how the candidate prioritises and communicates. Logistics is largely the management of exceptions, so that is what should be tested.

Verify spreadsheet skills
Much route and cost planning still happens in spreadsheets. A brief exercise sorting orders, calculating loads and summarising costs confirms a level that most candidates describe simply as advanced.

Ask about measurable improvements
Experienced coordinators can state how they reduced transport costs or improved on-time delivery. Those who only describe routine tasks probably followed a plan that somebody else designed.

Check composure under pressure
The role receives complaints from customers, drivers and sales staff simultaneously. Referees should be asked specifically how the candidate behaved on the worst days, when several deliveries failed at once.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements for a logistics coordinator in South Africa?

The most common ones in vacancies are: diploma or degree in logistics, supply chain, business administration or a related field; two or more years of experience in logistics, distribution or transport coordination; good command of Excel and experience with an ERP, warehouse or transport management system.

What is the difference between a logistics coordinator and a warehouse supervisor?

The warehouse supervisor manages what happens inside the building: receiving, storage, picking and stock accuracy. The logistics coordinator manages movement outside it: transport, routes, carriers and delivery to the customer. In small companies one person often does both, and the advert should say so openly.

Should a logistics coordinator have experience in the same industry?

It helps when the goods have special requirements, such as cold chain, hazardous materials or fragile items. For general merchandise, the skills transfer well between sectors. Experience with a similar volume of daily deliveries and a similar type of fleet is usually the more relevant comparison.

How much does it cost to advertise logistics coordinator vacancies on Saplic?

Nothing. Posting the vacancy is free and no credit card is required. The recruitment system for organising the people who apply is free as well.
