Job summary

A server takes care of guests from the moment they sit down until they pay: presenting the menu, taking orders, bringing food and drinks, and making sure nothing is missing. The role knows the menu in detail, enters orders accurately, coordinates with the kitchen and bar, and handles the check. For a restaurant, a good server increases the average check, turns tables efficiently, and makes guests want to return.

Main duties

  • Greet guests, present the menu, and explain specials, ingredients, and preparation
  • Take food and drink orders accurately and enter them in the point-of-sale system
  • Ask about allergies and dietary restrictions and communicate them clearly to the kitchen
  • Serve dishes and beverages in the correct order and to the right guest
  • Check back on each table during the meal and resolve requests or complaints promptly
  • Suggest appetizers, drinks, desserts, and pairings to enhance the guest experience
  • Present the check, process cash and card payments, and return change correctly
  • Clear and reset tables quickly and keep the assigned section clean
  • Complete opening and closing side work: polishing, restocking, and setting up the dining room

Typical requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or more of experience as a server or in customer service is preferred
  • Availability for nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to be on your feet for the whole shift and carry trays and plates
  • Basic math skills and ease with point-of-sale systems
  • Food handling permit or health certificate, where local rules require one for dining room staff
  • A second language is a plus in tourist areas

How to hire a server

Notice how the candidate greets you
How the candidate greets the interviewer, listens, and responds during the interview is how guests will be treated. Warmth and attentiveness are difficult to train and easy to observe.

Do a trial shift
A paid trial during a real service shows pace, memory, how the candidate moves around the floor, and how they work with the team. A couple of hours is enough to decide.

Explain how tips work
Whether tips are individual, pooled, or shared with the kitchen and bar affects income and motivation. Candidates should hear the exact arrangement before accepting, to avoid disputes.

Match the service style
A casual diner, a banquet hall, and a formal restaurant with wine service need different skills. Experience should be compared against the style and volume of the open position.

Test menu learning
Giving candidates a short menu to study for ten minutes and then asking them to describe and recommend two dishes shows memory, speech, and sales instinct at once.

Interview questions for server candidates

What would you do if a guest complained that their food was cold or not what they ordered?

What to look for: An apology without arguing, a quick fix with the kitchen, and informing the manager.

How did you handle having many tables seated at the same time?

What to look for: Prioritizing and grouping trips, acknowledging every table quickly, and asking teammates for support.

What would you do if a guest told you they had a food allergy?

What to look for: Asking exactly which ingredient is the problem, checking with the kitchen instead of guessing, and noting it clearly on the order.

How would you recommend a dish or a drink to a guest who was undecided?

What to look for: Asking about preferences first and suggesting with specific, appealing descriptions, without pushing.

How did you deal with a guest who was rude or had had too much to drink?

What to look for: Calm and respect, firm limits, and involving the manager at the right moment.

What would you do if you realized you had made a mistake on a check?

What to look for: Correcting it immediately and honestly, whether the error favored the guest or the restaurant.

What did you do when the kitchen was running late with your tables' orders?

What to look for: Keeping guests informed, offering something in the meantime, and coordinating with the kitchen without conflict.

What do you do during slow moments in the dining room?

What to look for: Initiative with side work, restocking, and preparation, instead of standing idle or on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a server make in the United States?

The median of the jobs posted on Saplic over the last 6 months is $3,296 per month, and the typical range runs from $3,193 to $3,498. This is a market benchmark, not an official figure.

What requirements are typical for a server in the United States?

The most common ones in job postings are: high school diploma or equivalent; six months or more of experience as a server or in customer service is preferred; availability for nights, weekends, and holidays.

Can a server be hired without experience?

Yes, especially for casual restaurants. A friendly, attentive person with a good memory and energy can learn the mechanics of service in a couple of weeks alongside an experienced colleague. For fine dining, wine service, or high-volume venues, experience is more important because guests expect polished technique from the first shift.

What qualities matter most when hiring a server?

Attitude toward service comes first: warmth, attentiveness, and composure when things go wrong. Then come memory, physical stamina, and the ability to work as a team with the kitchen and bar. Technical skills such as carrying trays or using the ordering system can be taught; genuine care for guests generally cannot.

How much does it cost to post server jobs on Saplic?

Nothing. Posting the job is free and no credit card is required. The recruiting system for organizing the people who apply is free too.
