How to hire a mechanic

Specify the equipment type
Light vehicles, heavy diesel trucks, motorcycles, and industrial machinery call for different experience. The posting should name the makes or types of equipment so that candidates can judge their own fit.

Evaluate diagnosis, not only repair
Replacing parts is the easy half. A test with a real fault, where the candidate must explain the reasoning before touching anything, separates technicians who diagnose from those who swap parts until it works.

Ask about electronics
Modern vehicles depend on sensors and control modules. A mechanic who avoids the scanner and the wiring diagram will leave a growing share of jobs unsolved, so this deserves direct questions.

Look at the candidate's tools
In trades where mechanics own their tools, a well-kept, complete set reflects experience and care. A disorganized or minimal set tends to predict the same qualities in the work.

Check for comebacks
References should be asked how often the candidate's repairs returned with the same problem. A low comeback rate is the most reliable indicator of quality in this trade.

Interview questions for mechanic candidates

How would you diagnose an engine that cranks but does not start?

What to look for: A logical sequence checking fuel, spark, air, and compression, and reading codes before replacing parts.

Could you describe an intermittent fault you chased and how you finally pinned it down?

What to look for: Reproducing the conditions that trigger it, testing and measuring one system at a time, and persistence without guesswork.

What would you do if you found an additional serious problem while doing a routine service?

What to look for: Stopping to inform the customer or supervisor, with an explanation of risk and cost before proceeding.

How do you use a scan tool, and what do you do after reading a fault code?

What to look for: Understanding that a code is a starting point, followed by live data and component testing.

What did you do the last time a vehicle came back with the same problem after your repair?

What to look for: Ownership, rechecking the diagnosis, correcting it without excuses, and learning from the miss.

How do you make sure a brake job is safe before releasing the vehicle?

What to look for: Torque to specification, bleeding, inspection of related components, and a road test.

What would you do if you were pressured to finish a job faster than you considered safe?

What to look for: Refusal to skip safety-critical steps and clear communication about the realistic time needed.

Which makes or types of equipment do you know best?

What to look for: Specific experience that matches the shop, and willingness to consult manuals for unfamiliar models.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a mechanic make in the United States?

The median of the jobs posted on Saplic over the last 6 months is $6,518 per month, and the typical range runs from $5,910 to $7,734. This is a market benchmark, not an official figure.

What requirements are typical for a mechanic in the United States?

The most common ones in job postings are: technical diploma or vocational certificate in automotive, diesel, or industrial mechanics; two or more years of experience in a repair shop, fleet, or maintenance department; experience using diagnostic scanners and reading service manuals and wiring diagrams.

What practical test can be given to a mechanic candidate?

A vehicle or machine with a known fault works best, for example a disconnected sensor or a blown fuse in a circuit. The candidate is asked to diagnose it and explain each step. In thirty minutes the test shows method, use of the scanner and multimeter, care with the equipment, and honesty about what they do not know.

Should a company with a vehicle fleet hire its own mechanic?

It usually becomes worthwhile when the fleet is large enough that vehicles are in outside shops every week. An in-house mechanic performs preventive maintenance on schedule, catches problems early, and reduces downtime. Smaller fleets are often better served by an agreement with a trusted shop and a strict maintenance calendar.

How much does it cost to post mechanic jobs on Saplic?

Nothing. Posting the job is free and no credit card is required. The recruiting system for organizing the people who apply is free too.
