Role summary

A driver transports goods or passengers safely, on time and in good condition, and is often the only member of the company the customer meets in person. The role includes checking the vehicle, planning the route, handling delivery documents and sometimes collecting payment. A careful driver protects lives, cargo and an expensive asset, and avoids the fines, accidents and fuel waste that erode profit.

Main duties

  • Carry out the daily vehicle check on tyres, brakes, lights, fluids and load security before departure
  • Deliver goods or transport passengers along the planned route within the agreed time windows
  • Load and unload the vehicle, or supervise loading, making sure the cargo is balanced and secured
  • Obtain signatures on delivery notes and return completed documents to the office each day
  • Collect payments on delivery where required and hand over cash and receipts accurately
  • Record mileage, fuel, trips and incidents in the vehicle log or the tracking application
  • Report defects, damage and accidents immediately and take the vehicle for scheduled servicing
  • Comply with traffic law, speed limits, driving-hours rules and company safety policies at all times
  • Keep the vehicle clean inside and out and treat customers courteously at every stop

Typical requirements

  • Secondary school certificate or equivalent
  • Valid driving licence for the relevant vehicle category, with a clean or near-clean record
  • Two or more years of verifiable professional driving experience
  • Good knowledge of the local road network and confident use of navigation applications
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to detect faults and carry out minor roadside fixes
  • Availability for early starts, overtime and trips outside the city when required
  • Any professional driving permit or medical certificate that the country requires

How to hire a driver

Verify the licence at source
The licence category, validity and driving record should be confirmed with the licensing authority wherever that service exists. A photocopy proves little, and an invalid licence can void the vehicle insurance after an accident.

Always conduct a road test
Thirty minutes in the actual type of vehicle, including reversing, parking and traffic, is indispensable. An experienced assessor in the passenger seat notices habits that no interview could reveal.

Call previous employers about accidents
Questions about accidents, fines, fuel consumption and vehicle care deserve direct answers from former supervisors. Unexplained gaps between driving jobs also merit a calm question during the interview.

Specify vehicle and route type
Driving a light van around the city differs greatly from long-distance heavy goods work. The advert should state the vehicle, the typical routes and whether nights away from home are involved.

Explain how the vehicle is monitored
Where vehicles carry GPS tracking or fuel controls, saying so during recruitment is fair and effective. Responsible drivers welcome it, and those who would misuse the vehicle tend to withdraw.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements for a driver in Tanzania?

The most common ones in vacancies are: secondary school certificate or equivalent; valid driving licence for the relevant vehicle category, with a clean or near-clean record; two or more years of verifiable professional driving experience.

What should be verified before hiring a driver?

The validity and category of the driving licence, the driving record where it can be consulted, any medical or professional certificate the country requires, and references from recent employers about accidents and vehicle care. A practical road test in the actual vehicle should complete the process before any offer.

Is it advisable to hire a driver who does not know the local area?

Navigation applications cover most of the gap for standard deliveries. Local knowledge still matters for multi-drop urban routes, where knowing loading bays, traffic patterns and shortcuts saves considerable time. A new driver can accompany an experienced colleague for the first week to learn the routes.

How much does it cost to advertise driver vacancies on Saplic?

Nothing. Posting the vacancy is free and no credit card is required. The recruitment system for organising the people who apply is free as well.
