Role summary
A QA tester checks that software does what it should before customers use it, and that it fails safely when something unexpected happens. The role designs test cases, runs manual and automated tests and reports defects in a form developers can act on. Each defect caught before release avoids support costs, lost sales and damage to the reputation of the product.

- Design test plans and test cases covering functional, edge and negative scenarios
- Execute manual tests on web and mobile applications across browsers, devices and screen sizes
- Report defects with clear steps to reproduce, expected and actual results, evidence and severity
- Retest fixed defects and run regression tests before every release to production
- Write and maintain automated tests for critical flows using tools such as Selenium, Cypress or Playwright
- Test APIs with tools such as Postman and validate results directly in the database with SQL
- Report test progress, coverage and outstanding risks to the team before the release decision
Typical requirements
- Degree or diploma in computing or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- One to two years of experience testing web or mobile applications
- Experience writing test cases and using a defect tracking tool such as Jira
- Basic SQL and experience testing APIs

How to hire a QA tester
Specify manual versus automation
Manual testers and automation engineers have different skills and expectations. Stating the approximate split between the two in the advert prevents hiring someone who expects to write code all day for a largely manual role.
Give a live testing exercise
Handing the candidate a simple form or application for twenty minutes and asking for the defects found shows method and curiosity. Strong testers explore edge cases; weak ones only confirm that the happy path works.
Read a sample defect report
The quality of a written defect report predicts daily usefulness. It should let a developer reproduce the problem without asking a single question. Vague reports multiply the work of the whole team.
Look for constructive assertiveness
A tester must be able to say that a release is not ready without creating conflict. Questions about past disagreements with developers reveal whether the candidate can hold that position without being either submissive or combative.
Value product understanding
Testers who understand how real users behave find the defects that matter. Candidates who ask about the customers and the business during the interview tend to prioritise far better than those focused only on tools.
Interview questions for QA tester roles
How would you test a login form?
What to look for: Goes beyond valid credentials: empty fields, lockout, injection, password recovery, sessions and accessibility.
Could you describe the most important defect you have found and how you found it?
What to look for: Curiosity beyond the script and a clear explanation of the impact on users.
What would you do if a developer said your defect was not a defect?
What to look for: Returns to the requirement and the evidence, discusses calmly and involves the product owner if needed.
How do you decide what to test when there is not enough time to test everything?
What to look for: Risk-based prioritisation: critical flows, recent changes and areas with a history of defects.
What does a good defect report contain?
What to look for: Title, environment, steps, expected and actual results, evidence, severity and priority.
Which tests would you automate first, and which would you leave manual?
What to look for: Automates stable, repetitive and critical flows; keeps exploratory and fast-changing areas manual.
How have you tested an API without a user interface?
What to look for: Uses Postman or similar, checks status codes, payloads, error handling and authentication.
What would you do if a serious defect appeared an hour before a planned release?
What to look for: Reports the facts and the risk immediately and lets the responsible person decide with full information.

Frequently asked questions
What are the requirements for a QA tester in Malaysia?
The most common ones in vacancies are: degree or diploma in computing or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; one to two years of experience testing web or mobile applications; experience writing test cases and using a defect tracking tool such as Jira.
Is a QA tester needed if the developers already test their own code?
Developer tests confirm that code does what the developer intended. A tester checks whether it does what the user needs, including the cases nobody thought of. Even one dedicated tester in a small team usually reduces production defects noticeably and frees developers from support work.
Should the first QA hire know test automation?
It is helpful but not the priority. A first tester adds most value by establishing test cases, a regression checklist and a clear defect process. Automation comes afterwards, on stable flows. A strong manual tester with scripting basics and the will to learn is generally the better first hire.
How much does it cost to advertise QA tester vacancies on Saplic?
Nothing. Posting the vacancy is free and no credit card is required. The recruitment system for organising the people who apply is free as well.
