To perform skilled welding and pipe fitting operations across the plant in a safe, efficient, and high-quality manner.

OBJECTIVE / PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

To perform skilled welding and pipe fitting operations across the plant in a safe, efficient, and high-quality manner. The incumbent is responsible for fabricating, repairing, and installing

metal structures and piping systems — including stainless steel, black iron, galvanized steel, and sanitary-grade assemblies — to ensure continuous and compliant operation of the

Oilseeds, Fats, and Margarine Plant.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform welding using MIG, TIG, MMA (Stick), and oxy-acetylene processes on a variety of metals including stainless steel (SS), black iron, and galvanized steel.
  • Execute sanitary/hygienic welding on stainless steel pipework, vessels, and equipment in the margarine plant in accordance with food-grade standards (e.g., full-penetration welds, smooth internal finishes, no crevices).
  • Carry out pipe fitting and installation of process pipework, including cutting, threading, flanging, and assembly of pipes across the plant.
  • Fabricate, install, repair, and modify structural metalwork, brackets, supports, skids, and equipment frames as required.
  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings, isometrics, and weld procedure specifications (WPS) to ensure all work meets design intent and quality standards.
  • Perform inspection of completed welds visually and by dye-penetrant or other specified methods; ensure all work passes internal quality checks before sign-off.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on plant equipment and structures, identifying and reporting corrosion, cracks, or structural deficiencies before failure.
  • Respond promptly to welding-related breakdowns and emergencies to minimize downtime in production.
  • Ensure proper preparation of metal surfaces before welding — grinding, degreasing, fitting-up — to maintain joint quality and integrity.
  • Strictly adhere to welding procedures and company standards for all work on pressure vessels, pipework, and plant structures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area; properly store and handle welding gases, electrodes, and consumables in accordance with safety requirements.
  • Comply with all personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements including welding masks, gloves, protective clothing, and respiratory protection.
  • Participate in Food Safety and Security activities when working in or near the margarine plant; adhere to hygiene and contamination-prevention protocols at all times.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records of work orders, materials used, and time spent on each job using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Coordinate with the Field Supervisor and Engineering team to plan and execute scheduled maintenance and capital projects.
  • Provide assistance and mentoring to junior technicians or apprentices as required.
  • Be available for shift work and call-outs as required (6am – 2pm; 2pm – 10pm; 10pm –6am).
  • Carry out such other related work as may be required or assigned.

ACADEMIC / TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2/3, or equivalent trade qualification in Welding and Fabrication.
  • AWS (D1.1 / D1.6), ASME IX, or equivalent welding certification is an asset.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial welding environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in stainless steel TIG welding, including sanitary/food-grade applications.
  • Pipe fitting and installation experience (threaded, flanged, and welded systems).
  • Experience with galvanized and black iron welding is required.
  • Knowledge of and ability to read engineering and piping drawings (P& IDs, isometrics).
