Kilimo Trust (KT) is a not-for-profit organization working on agriculture for development across the East African Community in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi.
In partnership with TradeMark Africa, Lattice Aquaculture and MicroSave Consulting, KT is co-implementing the Women and Youth Economic Empowerment in Fisheries Through Inclusive Market Access (WYEEFIMA) programme. This is a five-year initiative funded by the Mastercard Foundation.
Under the programme, KT leads the fish cross-border trade and distribution component, supporting employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women and youth within the fish and seaweed value chains.
Through this call for proposals, Kilimo Trust seeks qualified partners to support the delivery of the programme’s objectives.
The assignment
Kilimo Trust is seeking to engage an experiential trainer who will operate from either:
- A non-formal training centre; or
- A fisheries association equipped with appropriate facilities and equipment.
The trainer will deliver hands-on training to WYEEFIMA participants, primarily women and youth aged 18 to 35.
The training will focus on practical skills in:
- Hygienic fish and seaweed handling
- Value addition
- Storage
- Packaging
The assignment aims to build participants’ competencies in post-harvest practices and value addition to improve fish quality and marketability.
Scope of work
The consultant will be responsible for delivering practical training to WYEEFIMA participants in one or more of the following key areas:
- Hygienic handling and value addition for the market.
- Fish preservation technologies, including chilled or frozen, sun-dried or salted, smoked and deep-fried products, as well as other products.
- Seaweed value addition and innovative products—specifically for Zanzibar.
- Appropriate fish and seaweed packaging, labelling and storage tailored to the specific value-addition or curing method applied—specifically for Zanzibar.
- Training a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 40 WYEEFIMA participants within four days.
- Ensuring that a minimum of 80 participants are trained within 40 days.
Consultant deliverables
The selected consultant will be required to:
- Train 80 participants within 40 days in post-harvest practices and value addition.
- Submit a professionally formatted final training report detailing the training process, outcomes and recommendations.
Training locations
Interested applicants must indicate their preferred location or the region in which they wish to facilitate the training.
The training will be conducted in the following regions:
- Mwanza: Nyamagana, Ilemela, Ukerewe and Magu districts
- Zanzibar: Unguja
Qualifications and experience
Applicants must possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Proficiency and extensive experience at the community level, including a minimum of three years of experience in hands-on hygienic fish handling, value-addition skills and the trade of fish products.
- Basic or medium-level fluency in the language of instruction, such as English or Kiswahili.
- Relevant certifications or formal training in the craft or as a trainer. Training from DIT or a vocational training institution will be an added advantage.
