Am I entitled to severance if I lose my job?
Only on redundancy — when the position itself ceases to exist — and only with at least 104 weeks of continuous service. On dismissal for misconduct, you are owed notice, unpaid salary and accrued leave.
How is redundancy pay calculated in Jamaica?
Two weeks pay for each year of the first ten years of service, then three weeks pay for each year after that.
How much notice am I owed?
At least 2 weeks under 5 years of service, 4 weeks from 5 to 10, 6 weeks from 10 to 15, 8 weeks from 15 to 20, and 12 weeks at 20 years or more.
How much annual leave do I get?
A minimum of two weeks paid vacation, rising to three weeks after more than ten years with the same employer.
What deductions come off my pay?
Six statutory ones: PAYE, NIS, NHT, Education Tax, HEART/NTA and any employee-specific obligations. Each has its own rate and ceiling.
Can I claim my NHT contributions back?
Yes. Unlike a tax, NHT contributions are refundable after a set number of years and give access to NHT mortgage benefits.
How do I check my NIS contributions are being paid?
Request a statement of your contribution record from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. The deduction appearing on your payslip does not prove it was remitted.
Is there a legal probation period in Jamaica?
No statutory one. Collective agreements commonly set three to six months, but that comes from the agreement rather than legislation.
