The National Insurance Scheme is Jamaica's compulsory social security system. Both you and your employer contribute, each at around 3 % of gross salary up to an annual ceiling.
What it covers
- Old age pension once you reach pensionable age with sufficient contributions
- Invalidity benefit if you become unable to work
- Employment injury benefit for workplace accidents
- Widows and widowers benefit and orphans benefit
- Funeral grant
The point most people miss
Seeing the deduction on your payslip does not mean the money reached NIS. Those are two separate events.
An employer can deduct the contribution and fail to remit it. It happens, and the worker usually finds out years later — at exactly the moment the pension is needed.
How to check
You can request a statement of your contribution record from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. It shows which periods are credited and by which employer.
If there are gaps for periods when you were working, raise it immediately. The longer it goes uncorrected, the harder it is to fix.
Your NIS number
You need one, and it stays with you across jobs. If you have never had one, the MLSS handles registration.
If you are self-employed
Self-employed persons are also required to contribute. It is easy to overlook, and the consequence is a gap in your record that affects your pension entitlement later.
If your employer is not paying
Non-payment of NIS contributions is an offence. You can report it to the MLSS, which can pursue arrears from the employer.
