How to hire an electrician
Verify the licence or certificate
Where electrical work legally requires a licensed or registered person, the document should be checked with the issuing authority. Work by an unqualified electrician can invalidate insurance cover and endanger lives.
Specify the type of installation
Domestic wiring, commercial fit-outs and industrial maintenance with motors and controls are different specialisms. Stating the environment and the voltage levels in the advert filters candidates effectively.
Set a practical bench test
Wiring a simple motor starter circuit from a diagram, or tracing a prepared fault with a multimeter, shows real competence in half an hour. Experienced electricians work methodically and test before touching.
Listen for safety habits
Candidates should describe isolating, locking off and proving dead without being prompted. An electrician who boasts of working live to save time is a risk that no level of skill compensates for.
Check breakdown response for maintenance roles
In a factory, the value of an electrician shows when a line stops. Referees should be asked how quickly and calmly the candidate restored production during real breakdowns.
Interview questions for electrician roles

What to look for: Isolates, locks off, tags, proves dead with a tested instrument and only then begins work.
How would you find the fault on a motor that kept tripping its overload?
What to look for: Checks current, load, connections, insulation and settings in a logical order.
Could you describe the most complex installation or repair you have carried out?
What to look for: Technical depth appropriate to the role and a clear account of personal contribution.
What would you do if a supervisor asked you to bypass a safety device to keep production running?
What to look for: Refuses, explains the risk and proposes a safe alternative or a proper repair.
How do you select the correct cable size for a circuit?
What to look for: Considers load current, length, voltage drop, installation method and protective device.
What tests would you carry out on a new installation before energising it?
What to look for: Continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and earthing checks, with results recorded.

Frequently asked questions
What are the requirements for an electrician in Zimbabwe?
The most common ones in vacancies are: technical or vocational qualification as an electrician, or a completed apprenticeship; electrical licence, registration or competency certificate, as required in the country; two or more years of experience in domestic, commercial or industrial installations.
Is it better to employ an electrician or to subcontract electrical work?
Subcontracting suits occasional installations and certified inspections. A business with machinery, cold rooms or continuous operations benefits from its own electrician, because the response to a breakdown is immediate and preventive maintenance actually happens. The cost of a single prolonged stoppage often exceeds months of wages.
How can the competence of an electrician be confirmed before hiring?
Combine three checks: the licence or trade certificate verified with the issuer, a practical test involving wiring and fault finding, and references from previous employers or contractors about the quality and safety of their work. Any one of these alone can be misleading.
How much does it cost to advertise electrician vacancies on Saplic?
Nothing. Posting the vacancy is free and no credit card is required. The recruitment system for organising the people who apply is free as well.
