The American hiring process has features worth understanding before you start applying.
Applicant tracking systems
Most medium and large employers screen applications through applicant tracking systems before a human sees them.
That has direct consequences for how you write a resume — covered in detail in our resume guide — but the short version is: simple formatting, and the exact words from the job posting.
Referrals matter enormously
A substantial share of hires come through employee referrals. Many companies pay bonuses for them, which means employees are actively motivated to refer.
Reaching someone inside a company is often more effective than a cold application.
Sectors with sustained demand
Healthcare. Consistently the largest area of job growth, from nursing and allied health to administrative and support roles. Licensure requirements vary by state.
Technology. Concentrated in specific metros but increasingly remote-friendly. Screens on demonstrable skill and portfolio.
Logistics and warehousing. Large-volume hiring, often with rapid processes.
Hospitality and food service. High turnover, continuous hiring, and heavily affected by state minimum wage differences and tipped wage rules.
Skilled trades. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians and welders face persistent shortages. Apprenticeship routes exist and licensing is state-specific.
