Malaysia's labour market is concentrated in a few corridors, with distinct regional specialisations.
Klang Valley
Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya. The largest market — financial services, corporate headquarters, government, technology, professional services and shared services centres.
Penang
Electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, engineering and a growing technology sector. A long-established base for multinational manufacturing.
Johor
Manufacturing, logistics and services, with proximity to Singapore shaping the market. Iskandar and the surrounding development corridor drive demand.
Oil and gas
Concentrated in Terengganu, Sarawak and Sabah, with technical roles and offshore rotations. Safety certifications are threshold requirements.
Manufacturing generally
A major employer across the peninsula — electronics, automotive, rubber, palm oil processing and food manufacturing.
Shared services and BPO
A substantial sector serving regional clients, recruiting on language ability and systems experience.
Sabah and Sarawak
Worth knowing: employees there are covered by separate state ordinances, not the Employment Act 1955. The framework differs, so confirm which applies to a role.
What actually works
- A complete profile. Recruiters filter on experience and skills.
- Language ability. Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Tamil all carry weight depending on the role.
- Ask where the salary sits relative to RM4,000, since it decides your statutory protections.
- Confirm EPF, SOCSO and EIS registration before accepting.
Flexible working
You have a statutory right to request flexible arrangements on hours, days or location — worth knowing at offer stage.
Minimum wage
RM1,700 per month from February 2025, extended to all employers including micro-enterprises from August 2025.
Foreign workers
The Immigration Department regulates foreign employment. From October 2025, foreign workers also contribute to EPF at 2%.
