Finding work in Malawi: agriculture, NGOs and the cities

Malawi has a comparatively small formal employment market, concentrated in a few cities and a handful of sectors.

Lilongwe

The capital. Government, international organisations, NGOs, banking and services. It is where most donor-funded and diplomatic employment sits.

Blantyre

The commercial centre. Manufacturing, trade, banking, insurance and professional services.

Mzuzu and the north

A smaller market with government, education, trade and agriculture-linked employment.

Agriculture

The largest employer in the country. Tobacco, tea, sugar, macadamia and horticulture, with substantial estate employment and strong seasonality.

Roles range from field labour to agronomy and estate management.

The NGO and development sector

Unusually significant in Malawi relative to the size of the economy. International organisations, donor programmes and local NGOs employ across health, education, agriculture and governance.

This sector recruits formally — written applications, structured interviews — and values project management experience, report writing and monitoring and evaluation skills.

Contracts are often fixed-term and tied to project funding, which matters for your severance position.

Banking, telecoms and mining

Smaller in headcount but significant employers of skilled staff, with structured recruitment.

Tourism

Around Lake Malawi and the national parks, seasonal in nature.

What actually works

• Qualifications stated clearly. The NGO sector in particular screens on formal credentials.
• Referrals. They carry weight in a small market.
• English writing ability. It is a real differentiator in the donor-funded sector.
