How to hire a teacher

Observe a demonstration lesson
Twenty minutes teaching a real class shows more than any interview: clarity of explanation, rapport with pupils, pace and behaviour management. It should be a standard stage of every teaching appointment.

Complete safeguarding checks first
Background clearance for work with children, identity checks and references covering conduct with pupils must be completed before the teacher begins. No timetable pressure justifies skipping this step.

Specify level, subject and curriculum
Teaching early years, primary or secondary classes demands different training, and curricula differ between schools. The advert should give the age group, subjects and curriculum without ambiguity.

Ask for evidence of pupil progress
Strong teachers can describe how a particular class or pupil improved and what they did to achieve it. General statements about a passion for teaching are no substitute for concrete examples.

Recruit ahead of the academic year
The best teachers commit months before term starts and must usually give notice to their current school. Advertising early and deciding promptly avoids choosing from whoever remains at the last minute.

Interview questions for teacher roles

Could you describe a lesson you taught recently that went particularly well, and why?

What to look for: Clear objective, active pupils and evidence that learning actually took place.

How did you handle a pupil who repeatedly disrupted your lessons?

What to look for: Calm, consistent strategies, an effort to understand the cause and involvement of parents when needed.

How would you teach the same topic to a class with very different ability levels?

What to look for: Practical differentiation: varied tasks, grouping, support and extension work.

How do you know whether your pupils have understood a lesson?

What to look for: Checks during the lesson with questions and short tasks, not only in the final test.

What would you do if a pupil told you something that made you worry about their safety at home?

What to look for: Listens without promising secrecy, records it and reports immediately to the designated person.

How have you dealt with a parent who was unhappy with a mark or a decision of yours?

What to look for: Listens respectfully, explains with evidence and seeks a solution focused on the pupil.

How have you used technology to improve learning and not merely to decorate a lesson?

What to look for: A specific tool tied to a learning purpose and a view on when not to use it.

What would you do with a pupil who had fallen well behind the rest of the class?

What to look for: Diagnoses the gaps, plans targeted support, monitors progress and informs the parents.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements for a teacher in Kenya?

The most common ones in vacancies are: degree in education, or a degree in the subject taught together with a teaching qualification; teaching registration or licence, as required by the education authority of the country; one to two years of classroom experience at the relevant level.

Is a teaching qualification essential, or is subject knowledge enough?

Regulations in many countries require a teaching qualification or registration, particularly for younger pupils, so the legal position should be checked first. Beyond the law, subject experts without training often struggle with classroom management and assessment. Where they are hired, a mentor and a path to qualification should be provided.

What should a demonstration lesson assess?

Whether the objective is clear, whether the explanation is accurate and understandable, how pupils are involved, how the teacher checks understanding and how behaviour is managed. A short conversation afterwards, in which the candidate reflects on what worked and what could improve, is equally informative.

How much does it cost to advertise teacher vacancies on Saplic?
