STORE MANAGER – FOOD RETAIL

Location: Woodmead, Gauteng

Salary: R20,000 – R25,000 per month

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Store Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day operations and commercial performance of a busy, high-footfall food retail environment in Woodmead.

The ideal candidate will have a strong operational background in FMCG, Cash & Carry, wholesale, or large-format food retail, with proven experience managing a sizeable store and team.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum 5 years' relevant experience in FMCG, wholesale, Cash & Carry, or food retail.
• Proven experience managing a large retail store with approximately 10–15 till points.
• Proven experience managing, motivating, and leading a sizeable store team.
• Experience working in a high-footfall retail environment.
• Previous experience managing a store with significant weekend trading.
• Strong operational knowledge of Cash & Carry or FMCG retail environments.
• Proven experience managing store turnover and key commercial performance indicators.
• Experience with stock ordering, replenishment, receiving, stock control, and inventory management.
• Experience using POS systems and retail management systems.
• Strong knowledge of FMCG brands, products, and supplier relationships.
• Strong understanding of retail operations, customer service, merchandising, and loss prevention.
• Excellent leadership, problem-solving, organisational, and communication skills.
• Must be highly hands-on and comfortable being actively involved in the daily running of the store.

Key Responsibilities

• Take full responsibility for the day-to-day operation and performance of the store.
• Lead, manage, and motivate the store team to achieve operational and commercial targets.
• Drive sales, turnover, profitability, and overall store performance.
• Monitor and manage key performance indicators and take corrective action where required.
• Ensure effective stock ordering, replenishment, receiving, storage, and inventory control.
• Manage stock levels and minimise stock losses, shrinkage, wastage, and discrepancies.
• Ensure POS and cash-up processes are properly managed and controlled.
• Maintain high standards of customer service and ensure the store delivers a positive customer experience.
• Manage staff scheduling and ensure adequate staffing levels, particularly during busy trading periods and weekends.
• Maintain excellent standards of housekeeping, merchandising, product availability, and store presentation.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with FMCG suppliers and service providers.
• Ensure compliance with company policies, operational procedures, health and safety requirements, and food-retail standards.
• Identify operational challenges and implement practical solutions quickly and effectively.
• Lead from the front and remain actively involved in the store's daily operations.

The Ideal Candidate

We are specifically looking for a hands-on retail operator who understands what it takes to run a busy FMCG/Cash & Carry store.

Candidates who have progressed through the operational side of retail and have real, practical experience managing stores, people, stock, tills, suppliers, and turnover will be strongly preferred.

A purely corporate or office-based retail background without substantial hands-on store management experience will not be suitable for this position.
