Job Description

We are looking for a senior Japanese Content Strategist to strengthen our Japan-facing social media and entertainment marketing capabilities.

The ideal candidate is someone who can lead Japanese audience thinking, originate ideas in Japanese, and advise JUO & NIR and its clients on how entertainment titles should be positioned, discussed, and activated for Japanese audiences.

This is not a translation role or a language-checking role. The right person should be able to shape strategy before concepts are developed, challenge ideas that do not feel natural in Japan, come up with Japanese-first alternatives, and clearly explain their recommendations to both Japanese- and English-speaking stakeholders.

Role Scope

  • Lead / co-lead Japanese audience strategy for selected briefs.
  • Shape title positioning, audience priorities and social content approaches.
  • Originate Japanese-first concepts and editorial formats.
  • Advise on domestic Japanese audience behaviour, fandom and entertainment culture.
  • Identify cultural, tonal, language and reputational risks early.
  • Strengthen JUO & NIR’s ability to present credible Japanese-native thinking to clients.
  • Share knowledge and strategic judgement to our internal team.

 Key Responsibilities

Japanese Audience and Content Strategy

  • Develop / co-develop Japanese audience strategies for anime and live action title campaigns, always-on and multi-title social media promotion, reactive opportunities and community engagement.
  • Turn business objectives and insights into clear Japanese social strategies.
  • Define relevant Japanese audience segments, including differences between existing fans, casual viewers, and new audiences.
  • Recommend the role that different content should perform: awareness, understanding, encouraging conversation, sustaining interest, etc.
  • Identify where Japanese audience behaviour, platform culture or promotion rhythms require a different approach from global or English-first strategies.

Creative and Editorial Development

  • Evaluate concepts for Japanese audience readiness: cultural relevance, title understanding, language, tonal accuracy, sensitivity, humour and formality.
  • Adapt global or English-first concepts into Japanese-native executions where appropriate. Where adaptation is insufficient, provide a stronger alternative backed by a sound rationale.
  • Review and refine priority Japanese copy, including captions, hooks, supers, title cards, text overlays, community prompts and short-form editorial lines.
  • Work with assigned Japanese writers and/or editorial creatives.

Client and Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Join selected internal and client-facing discussions on Japanese audience strategy, concept development, campaign direction and creative feedback.
  • Present and explain Japanese strategic recommendations in Japanese or English, depending on stakeholder requirements.
  • Demonstrate understanding of feedback that changes the strategy, language or cultural correction, and broader audience concerns.
  • Provide clients and internal teams with clear explanations of why a particular line, concept, audience framing or creative route works or does not work in Japan.
