Job Description

We are looking for a freelance Japanese Editorial Creative to support our social media work. This role is for someone who can think creatively in Japanese, understand Japanese entertainment and internet culture, and help shape social concepts that feel audience-native rather than translated. The work sits across Japanese live-action titles, anime titles, talent-led content, fandom conversation, title launches, always-on social formats, and campaign extensions.

This is not a translation-only role. The right person should be able to originate ideas, sharpen social angles, write Japanese copy, evaluate cultural nuance, and help usR create stronger Japan-facing and Japan-sensitive work.

Role Scope

The Freelance Japanese Editorial Creative will support our social team by bringing Japanese language, audience, and cultural expertise into the concepting and editorial development process.

You will work with the team on briefs, helping turn title information, campaign priorities, creative routes, and asset limitations into social-first ideas that can work for Japanese-speaking audiences or audiences engaging with Japanese entertainment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Japanese-language social media concepts, including launch ideas, always-on formats, fandom prompts, editorial video ideas, carousel concepts, short-form scripts, captions, and copy lines.
  • Evaluate existing social concepts for Japanese audience readiness, including cultural fit, language nuance, tone, fandom sensitivity, title understanding, and whether the idea feels natural in-market.
  • Write and refine Japanese social copy, including captions, hooks, supers, title cards, text overlays, community prompts, and short-form editorial lines.
  • Adapt global or English-first concepts into Japanese-native executions where appropriate, without defaulting to direct translation.
  • Provide cultural and language consultation on Japanese internet behavior, entertainment fandoms, anime discourse, live-action drama conversation, talent sensitivities, humor, formality levels, slang, and platform-native expression.
  • Support concept decks and editorial submissions by adding Japanese rationale, audience context, or language notes where needed.
  • Flag cultural risks, tonal mismatches, unnatural phrasing, overclaiming, title misreadings, or anything that may feel off to Japanese audiences.
  • Collaborate with Social, Strategy, Creative, Accounts, Project Management, and Post-Production teams to ensure ideas are creatively strong, executable, and aligned with client guardrails.
  • When needed, help interpret feedback from clients, stakeholders, other writers, QC partners, or other agency collaborators so that revisions remain strategically clear and culturally accurate.
