This position is assigned to the Carpentry and Maintenance Mechanic Shop in the Facilities Management Service Line. The position is responsible for maintenance and repair of the total lock system, lock maintenance, lock installation, latches, and strike plate repair requirements for MEDVAMC and its outer lying campus buildings. Position is subject to call back during off duty hours for irregular or emergency situations. Performs routine and priority repairs and installation of all types of locking devices. Perform preventative maintenance work on all automatic doors and locking devices. Perform major and minor repairs to doors and frames, make keys, and keep accurate records of disbursement; including master keying, pinning, re-keying and changing mechanical locking devices, i.e., removable core, interchangeable core, key in knob (cylindrical lockset), key in lever, mortise locksets, dead bolt, and rim cylinder latches. Installs and adjusts a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices including combination locks, which are typically installed in security units such as safes, vaults, cabinets and chests. Incumbent installs locks in doors, desks, office furniture, safes and other units as required by approved work orders only. Makes necessary alterations to locking mechanisms and units to assure correct fit. Replaces escutcheon and face plates on doors to change size of existing holes, measures precisely and cuts off excess spindles, changes position of spline key to reverse lock case direction. Performs installation, programming, maintenance of all type of combination locks, both standard and electronic. Repairs a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices. Services and maintains the MEDVAMC interchangeable multiplex core system; Performs complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing and installing a variety of locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes and other secured locations. Uses a variety of hand and power shops tools in accomplishing assignments. Lays out complete locking systems for entire buildings or groups of buildings, establishing grandmaster, master, sub-master, and individual room key systems for areas containing extremely valuable medical research equipment as well as highly sensitive items such as drugs and pharmaceuticals. Responsible for control of the lock combination equipment and the register of key combinations and codes in order to safeguard against unauthorized duplication of keys to sensitive areas. Installs, repairs, and maintains doors, door closers and mortise locksets, security, night latch, cylindrical and electric locks. Installs door closer on metal and wood doors and floor type closers on wood and glass doors.
