The Secret Service is seeking retirees of the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) or Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) to support our integrated mission and impart knowledge and experience to the current workforce. The Criminal Investigator's mission is to perform critical protective and investigative assignments. The Criminal Investigator has accomplished this mission through a tradition of honor, integrity and a commitment to excellence.
During the course of working in the Office of Protective Operations; Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information; or Office of Technical Operations, Criminal Investigators carry out critical investigations and protection assignments. Duties include: Planning, coordinating, and conducting exceptionally difficult and sensitive protective assignments; and leading and coordinating teams of special agents in advance security surveys for high-profile individuals critical to government continuity and national/international security; and conducting countersurveillance in support of protective operations. Participating in planning, coordinating, and conducting exceptionally difficult and sensitive investigative activities (e.g. financial crimes fraud, major counterfeit, intelligence investigations, etc.); and conducting and coordinating special projects to develop, modify, or enhance protective and investigative policies, procedures, guidelines, and approaches for service-wide use. Operating designated security posts at official or social functions attended by protectees; restricting access to closed areas, ensuring only authorized persons enter; and coordinating the collection, evaluation, and analysis of extensive and often conflicting intelligence information gathered through a wide variety of sources (e.g. interviews, liaison with other agencies, reports from concerned citizens, etc.). Coordinating, directing, and reviewing field investigations, including those related to financial crimes, counterfeiting, and other violations; ensures investigative activities are conducted in accordance with agency policies and procedures, and provides guidance and oversight to investigative teams. Investigating violations of federal laws related to the fraudulent manufacture and use of credit/debit cards, access devices, and computers/telecommunications equipment; electronic fund transfer and financial institution fraud and the counterfeiting of currency and securities of the United States and foreign governments. This Criminal Investigator position starts within the GS-13 salary range of $125,158 step 1, to $162,708 step 10.
Be a U.S. Citizenship is required. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service. If selected for this position, you will be required to: Obtain and maintain a Top-Secret Tier 5 clearance. For more information visit OPM Mythbuster Page. Submit to a drug test and credit check prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position. Submit to a polygraph examination prior to your appointment. Undergo domestic and foreign travel which will be determined by the hiring office based on the needs of the agency. Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory. You will be ineligible to occupy this position if at any time you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, unless you received a pardon, or your conviction was expunged or set aside. Complete a pre-employment medical examination (including vision, hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities) by an authorized Government physician and be determined physically fit to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties. You will be required to undergo regular physical examinations and to maintain a level of physical fitness in accordance with the standards and policies of this agency. Successfully complete a 10-week Mixed Basic Training Course (MBTC) or 1- week Reintegration Training Course at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, MD as applicable. Since the duties of this position are exacting and involve the responsibility for the safety of others under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any condition that would hinder full, efficient performance of the duties of this position or that would cause the individual to be a hazard to himself/herself or to others is disqualifying. There are also specific medical requirements for this position, and any chronic disease or condition affecting the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, digestive, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, nervous, genitourinary, and other systems that would impair full performance of the duties of the position may also be disqualifying.
