How much compensation for unlawful termination in Egypt?
Not less than two months’ wage for each year of service under Article 165, where an indefinite contract is terminated for an illegitimate reason.
What about fixed-term contracts?
New under Law 14 of 2025: one month’s salary for each year of service if the employer terminates before expiry.
What is the notice period?
Three months for indefinite-term contracts regardless of length of service, replacing the old two-or-three-month split.
Can I take time off to job hunt during notice?
Yes. Article 162 gives you one day off per week, or eight hours during the week, when the employer gives notice.
How many copies of my contract should exist?
Four: employer, employee, social insurance authority and Labour Office. One of them is legally yours.
Are contracts permanent by default?
Yes. The law presumes all employment contracts are permanent unless justified otherwise.
How much annual leave do I get?
Fifteen days in the first year, 21 from the second, and 30 at ten years of service or age 50.
How long do I have to withdraw a resignation?
Ten days from the employer’s acceptance, in writing and certified by the competent authority.
What can the labour courts do while a case runs?
Issue urgent orders including suspending a dismissal or enforcing partial wage payments during litigation.
