Social Education Victoria (SEV) is seeking an experienced Publications Coordinator to coordinate the publication and ongoing development of our textbooks and assorted online teaching resources for VCE Politics and VCE Sociology.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, supportive not-for-profit organisation producing educational resources used in schools across Victoria. As Publications Coordinator, you will take the lead on our publishing program, working collaboratively with authors, editors, designers and printers to deliver high-quality resources that support teachers and students.

Working in a small team, you'll enjoy a varied and flexible role supporting teachers as they help students understand an increasingly complex social and political world. Our resources evolve alongside current events, curriculum and classroom practice.

The central focus of the role will be coordinating the publication of the minor second editions of our VCE Politics Units 1 and 2 and VCE Sociology Units 1 and 2 textbooks for release in late 2027, while continuing to expand and maintain SEV's growing collection of online teaching resources.

This is a 12-month contract, with the possibility of an ongoing role.

About Social Education Victoria

Social Education Victoria is a member-based not-for-profit organisation supporting the teaching of VCE Politics, VCE Sociology and Civics and Citizenship across Victoria.

Working closely with experienced teachers and assessors, we produce widely used textbooks, online teaching resources, trial examinations and professional learning to support high-quality teaching and learning. Our publications combine contemporary case studies, practical classroom activities and clear explanations of curriculum content, with a strong emphasis on making complex political and sociological concepts accessible to senior secondary students. More than 4,500 copies of our four textbooks are sold to Victorian schools each year.

About the role

Working with the support of the Executive Officer, Projects Officer and Finance Officer, you will oversee SEV's VCE resource publishing program from commissioning through to publication.

Key responsibilities include:

  • communicating proactively with our small team so we can address challenges together
  • coordinating the commissioning, editing and distribution of online teaching resources, including case studies, classroom activities, planning resources, sample assessment tasks and textbook supplements
  • coordinating the publication of the minor second editions of SEV's existing VCE Politics Units 1 and 2 and VCE Sociology Units 1 and 2 textbooks, for release in late 2027
  • liaising regularly with teacher-authors to coordinate contracts, monitor progress, provide editorial feedback and keep projects progressing to schedule
  • undertaking developmental editing, copyediting and proofreading, commissioning additional editorial support where required
  • briefing and liaising with our editors, graphic designer and typesetter, and our printer
  • assisting with the distribution of publications to schools and booksellers during the annual sales season (October–February).

This role reports to the Executive Officer (EO). The EO and SEV staff are supported and guided by the Committee of Management, itself made up of experienced teachers and educators from across Victoria.

About you

Along with a love for the humanities or the social sciences, you will ideally bring experience in some or most of the following:

  • developmental editing, copyediting and proofreading
  • editorial project coordination for educational or academic publishing
  • coordinating multiple concurrent projects
  • working with authors, editors and external contractors
  • producing educational resources or other comparable publications
  • excellent written communication and editorial judgement
  • strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

Experience working with curriculum, teachers or educational publishing would be highly regarded but is not essential.

Working at SEV

SEV is a small but mighty team of four, dedicated to supporting teachers, students and good humanities education.

Working at SEV means enjoying a high amount of collegial support, and a truly flexible and wellbeing-focused work culture. We work remotely but often choose to come together to collaborate and connect at Our Community House, a co-working space in North Melbourne.

This role is for you if you thrive working in a small and highly dedicated team and are passionate about education and supporting teachers.

We offer:

  • A primarily work-from-home position with flexible working arrangements.
  • Regular opportunities to connect with colleagues meet via Zoom and face-to-face at our North Melbourne co-working space, which you can also access as an alternative to working from home.
  • The opportunity to assist colleagues in delivering teacher professional learning events, including our Annual Conference and other events delivered both online and in person. Some events may occur outside normal business hours.
  • A collaborative and supportive team environment where your ideas and initiative are valued.
  • The opportunity to shape humanities education across Victoria.
  • A structured handover and onboarding period, including knowledge transfer from the staff member currently responsible for SEV's publications.
