This is an opportunity to play a key role in a growing national conservation organisation while enjoying the flexibility of remote work and a genuine work-life balance.

ABOUT US

Biodiversity Legacy (BDL) provides a pioneering approach to protecting land for future generations, and for engaging regional communities in ongoing environmental stewardship. We fill a gap in biodiversity conservation where protection via another existing conservation pathway isn’t possible or suitable. Specifically, we:

  • Facilitate land protection through the transfer of title into safe community-governed not-for-profit ownership structures (local landholding entities) for long-term conservation;
  • Support with identification of viable stewardship pathways; and
  • Provide ongoing governance support to ensure that land is protected according to its intended purpose.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We're looking for an experienced Finance & Business Manager who enjoys combining financial management with business operations, governance and continuous improvement.

Reporting to the Head of Conservation Engagement & Partnerships, you'll provide leadership across finance and business operations, ensuring our financial systems, governance and internal operations support the organisation's long-term sustainability and growth.

This is a broad and rewarding role, ideal for someone who enjoys balancing strategic thinking with hands-on implementation.

You'll work closely with our Executive Team, Board, program staff and external advisers to ensure BioDiversity Legacy remains financially strong, well-governed and equipped to deliver meaningful conservation outcomes.

If you enjoy improving processes, building efficient systems and helping organisations thrive, this role offers the opportunity to make a genuine impact.

The role is offered part-time and is fully remote (Victoria or New South Wales preferred) with occasional travel to Melbourne and/or other regional areas.

Key responsibilities

Financial Leadership

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of BDL’s Finances and Accounting processes with support from external Bookkeeper.
  • Develop and oversee the organisation’s Budget and financial strategy in line with mission and long-term goals.
  • Manage and oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, expense management and payroll process with support of external bookkeeper.
  • Developing budgets, forecasts and cash flow reporting.
  • Preparing monthly financial reports for the Executive and Board.
  • Managing financial planning and analysis.
  • Overseeing grants, philanthropic income and funding acquittals.
  • Coordinating annual audits, supporting end to end process.
  • Supporting payroll, accounts payable and receivable (with assistance from an external bookkeeper).
  • Identifying opportunities to improve financial systems and reporting.
  • Support the administration and reporting of organisational reserves, policies and investments.

Business Operations

  • Overseeing organisational administration, insurance and business systems.
  • Supporting IT systems and operational processes.
  • Developing policies and procedures that improve efficiency and accountability.
  • Managing external suppliers and service providers.
  • Supporting program teams with financial systems and reporting.
  • Provide Executive support to the leadership team as required.
  • Ensure business systems are efficient, scalable, and support organisational growth.

Governance & Compliance

  • Supporting compliance with ACNC, DGR and statutory obligations.
  • Maintaining financial controls and organisational risk frameworks.
  • Monitoring compliance requirements.
  • Supporting workplace health and safety.
  • Preparing reports for the Executive and Board on compliance status and emerging risks.
  • Develop and lead finance policy and process improvement.

About you

Essential

  • Tertiary qualification in business administration, commerce, accounting, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of financial governance, compliance, and risk management frameworks relevant to charities and not-for-profit organisations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial management and reporting standards applicable in Australia.
  • Right to work in Australia.
  • Experience using Xero.
  • Understanding of Australian financial governance and compliance.
  • Ability to work independently within a remote team.

Desirable

  • Charities or not-for-profit organisations.
  • Environmental or conservation organisations.
  • Grant management and acquittals.
  • ACNC compliance.
  • Current driver’s licence and capacity to travel regionally and interstate.
  • Additional qualifications or training in bookkeeping, administration or organisational development.
