Overview

The Compliance Officer plays a vital role ensuring Climate 200 and its donors comply with Australia’s complex state and federal electoral laws with precision and confidence.

Reporting to Legal & Compliance Director, you will own responsibility for electoral compliance across all jurisdictions Climate 200 operates in. You will serve as Climate 200’s subject matter expert, advising staff on the legal implications of proposed activities and providing clear and actionable advice, and managing statutory reporting obligations.

This role is ideally suited to someone with legal training, a regulatory compliance specialist, or someone with direct experience working within an Australian electoral commission.

Key Responsibilities

  • In house electoral law expert Serve as Climate 200’s subject matter expert on federal, state, and territory electoral acts, with the support of Climate 200’s external lawyer. Provide timely, practical and clear guidance to internal staff and Climate 200 donors on proposed activities. Develop clear compliance guidelines and briefings for staff and donors.

  • Statutory Reporting & Disclosures Project manage statutory disclosures in each jurisdiction Climate 200 operates in, with the support of the Operations and Finance teams. Sign off on electoral disclosures for submission. Respond in a timely manner to correspondence from electoral commissions and oversee electoral commission audit processes. Ensure internal systems are fit for purpose for rigorous and efficient monitoring of incoming and outgoing donations and electoral expenditure.

Desirable Experience, Qualifications and Attributes

  • Legal or Regulatory Expertise: Background in Law or similar discipline; or experience working within an Australian electoral commission or political/legal compliance role.
  • Clear & Approachable Communicator: Able to give guidance and feedback on complex matters calmly, clearly, and constructively to time-pressured staff.
  • Project management: Establishes clear project plans, effectively manages helpers and delegates for the fulfilment of rolling statutory requirements.
  • Uncompromising Integrity: Absolute commitment to transparency, ethical standards, and governance.
  • Solution-Oriented: Builds efficient systems to handle recurring questions.
  • Agility: Comfortable balancing routine statutory deadlines with fast-moving, ad-hoc legal inquiries during high-intensity campaign cycles.
