At COTA Victoria, we believe ageing is not a problem to be solved, but a powerful stage of life to be lived with autonomy, connection and purpose. Through Seniors Rights Victoria (SRV), we work alongside older people to prevent and respond to elder abuse and uphold the rights of older Victorians.
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Community Lawyer to join our multidisciplinary team and play a key role in protecting older people's access to safe and secure housing.
This is an exciting opportunity to combine legal practice, community education, outreach and systemic advocacy to create meaningful change for older Victorians.
About the role
Reporting to the Managing Lawyer, you will provide legal advice, casework and representation to older people experiencing or at risk of elder abuse, with a particular focus on housing, property and related matters.
Working closely with our Advocacy and Education teams, you will:
- Provide legal advice, casework and representation to older people
- Support older Victorians to maintain secure housing and prevent elder abuse
- Deliver community education and information sessions across Victoria
- Build strong partnerships with Community Legal Centres and other sector stakeholders
- Contribute to law reform, systemic advocacy and sector capacity building initiatives
- Participate in outreach activities, including regional Victoria travel
About you
You are a lawyer who is committed to social justice and enjoys working directly with people to achieve positive outcomes.
You will bring:
- Admission as an Australian Lawyer with an unrestricted practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one in Victoria)
- Minimum two years post-admission experience
- Experience in property law, trusts, wills and powers of attorney
- An understanding of family violence and/or elder abuse, or a demonstrated ability to quickly develop this knowledge
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain legal concepts in plain language
- Experience or confidence delivering community education and presentations
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- A commitment to working respectfully with older people and people from diverse backgrounds
- A collaborative approach to working within a multidisciplinary team
