This position is accountable directly to the Associate Chief Nurse of Inpatient Services and will be physically located at the Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center. The Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department (ED) assumes all technical and administrative responsibility for the coordination and management of the ED Nursing staff. Serves as the primary point of contact, clinical and technical subject matter expert, and educator for all ED related matters. Responsible for twenty-four-hour accountability for the management of nursing practice and nursing operations as well as the coordination and management of care in the ED. Responsible for compliance to Conditions of Participation standards and is expected to create and advocate for a healthy work environment that is conducive to the recruitment and retention of highly competent nursing staff. Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to be engaged in the administrative nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision making as well as enhanced skills in nursing management. Provide leadership in daily operations and input into the strategic planning process for the attainment of the facility's and organizational goals. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following; Accurately completing all proficiencies and performance appraisals in an efficient manner. Implementing plans for the achievement of identified performance measures, evaluating staff competencies, and monitoring staff performance against established standards. Monitoring unplanned leave usage and exercising disciplinary action as appropriate in a fair and consistent manner. Determining and adjusting staffing levels based on patient acuity and volume. Collaborating with the Social Work Service and Utilization Review (UR) Nurse to expedite patient discharge. Monitoring the patient assessment/reassessment process for quality and accuracy. Keeping staff informed of any changes impacting the provision of patient care/unit operations and staff performance. Facilitating the flow of patients from Triage to the Emergency Department or Primary Care, as needed. Participating on various committees as related to patient flow activities, i.e. Utilization Management Committee. Leading by example in a manner that demonstrates accountability and adherence to the highest standards of professional practice and patient care.
