The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for supporting inpatient operations for 32 bed acute inpatient medicine ward. The ANM works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to fulfill supervisory functions and ensures the seamless operations of the unit.
The ANM acts as a supervisor, providing oversight for administrative tasks such as leave management, counseling, disciplinary actions, training, and evaluation of designated unit staff. The ANM applies necessary skills and coordinates or identifies educational and training needs for professional staff development and emerging needs at all levels. Additionally, the ANM assists in creating a positive and supportive work environment to enhance care delivery and professional development for clinically competent staff. Major duties include but are not limited to: Responsible for contributing to the establishment and implementation of evidence-based best practices in nursing care. Promotes professional governance initiatives and encourages participation of all staff. Serves as Acting Nurse Manager in the absence of the Nurse Manager. Serves as an assistant with authority delegated by the Nurse Manager, providing leadership, supervision, and direction to nursing staff. Performs delegated duties including developing schedules, completing performance evaluations, and initiating or recommending disciplinary actions. Responsible for performance improvement, customer service, patient satisfaction, employee safety, and adherence to standards of care and practice, as well as accreditation and regulatory standards. Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to assure responsibility and accountability for day-to-day clinical operations and patient flow, including supervision and evaluation of care delivered by all levels of nursing staff. Identifies developmental and training needs of staff and provides support for such development and training per VA Handbook 500 Part 8. Conducts effective staff conferences and accepts responsibility for meetings, conferences, unit activities, direction, and follow-up with decided plans to improve patient care. Leads or delegates group activities to solve problems or accomplish specific tasks, serving as a role model in comprehensive patient and family care and resolution of issues. Facilitates operational exchange of ideas between peers, managers, and staff, creatively responds to and evaluates suggestions for improvement.
