The Registered Nurse provides pre-operative/procedural care, including (but not limited to) the nursing assessment of patients, consent, and History and Physical (H&P) validations, the starting of intravenous fluids including venipuncture, assisting with peripheral nerve blocks, assuring all lab work and other pre-operative/procedural testing is completed and communicated to team members, confirms surgical sites are prepared and marked, and the administration of medications as ordered.
https://youtu.be/EGW4PMZvJto?si=8o2FdaYsDIPwQX1E Major duties include but may not be limited too: Provides pre-operative/procedural care, including Nursing assessment of patients, consent process, History and Physical (H&P) validations Initiates intravenous fluids and performs venipuncture Assists with peripheral nerve blocks Ensures all lab work and other pre-operative/procedural testing is completed and communicated to team members Confirms surgical sites are prepared and marked Administers medications as ordered Provides clear and concise preoperative teaching and reviews discharge instructions to patients and families (written and verbal) Monitors patients post-anesthesia/sedation recovery Closely observes for side effects of post-residual anesthesia medications Maintains knowledge of current American Society of periAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards, VHA Directives, and service level standard operating procedures Ensures comprehensive, timely, and accurate documentation of all phases of care in the electronic health record (EHR) Provides competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients Assists with nursing education, orientation, competencies, and quality improvement/outcomes utilization Integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment; is self-directed in goal setting for managing complex situations Validates understanding of rationale for care processes and decisions Demonstrates expanded knowledge base of the nursing process for assigned patient care Develops basic leadership skills by seeking additional leadership experiences within the unit Questions clinical practices to promote evidence-based care Demonstrates the ability to cope with and manage competing priorities Independently plans and delivers technically competent care to patients with complex needs in alignment with the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice. Provides and directs others in Veteran/patient driven care that optimizes the patient's experience, satisfaction, and/or safety for a team of patients. Demonstrates knowledge over a wide range of job responsibilities, effectively communicating with individuals and groups to build a strong sense of teamwork and purpose. Meets the needs of all customers while supporting the Medical Center and Service missions Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner Provides customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures Handles conflict and problems with customers constructively and appropriately. This position includes a level of physicality normally associated with duties performed by nurses such as direct patient care, and potentially long periods of walking, standing, sitting, moderate lifting, repeated bending, or kneeling. Significant amounts of time standing assisting assigned patients, utilization of safe patient handling and mobility protocol. Position specific duties/expectations are detailed in the associated competency and should be performed once the competency has been validated. This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments.
