This position is established at the Erie VA Medical Center in the Facilities Management Service (FMS) to perform work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of all piping systems such as high temperature water, high pressure steam, nitrous oxide, oxygen gas, steam generating hot/cold water, air, drain and vent systems. Works in the Maintenance and Repair Section to run and analyze samples and adjust as needed.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am -3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Plumber/PD025940 Major Duties Include but not limited to: Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Work from blueprints, building plans, and sketches to plan and layout the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment. Install, modify, and repair systems like those described above by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope, and determining and installing valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of systems. Install equipment like that described above by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, and seating, hooking up, and testing the equipment. Work in the Maintenance and Repair Section where the quality of water is below acceptable prescribed standards and requires non-filtration and filtrations processes to change the taste, odor, or chemical content of the water. Makes regular checks of pumping equipment, gauges, meters, feeders, and the recording and control devices according to a prescribed schedule and performs routine operator maintenance. May be required to operate a government vehicle to transport equipment to and from a work site. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: Duties are active involving such as, but not limited to heavy lifting up to 40 lbs., climbing, pulling, kneeling, bending, crawling, walking, and standing for prolonged periods. Operates manual/power tools, hammers, saws, chisels, wrenches, cutters, screwdrivers, drills, pliers, etc. The incumbent frequently works in cramped quarters, crawl spaces, tunnels, and manholes. Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The plumbers are sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. While repairing insulation, incumbent will wear the proper personal protection equipment and follow VA and OSHA regulations.
