The Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking a Full-Time, Physician Assistant - Nephrology to join the Specialty Care Service Line at the VAMC in Iowa City, Iowa. Note: This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT through November 9, 2026. The first referral cut-off is September 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST, with monthly cut-offs on the 1st. Applications received after each cut-off will be reviewed as needed until the position is filled.
The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. Coordinate and supervise the delivery of complex care for patients with kidney diseases with a focus on outpatient management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension. Inpatient support for acute consults may be required on occasion. Outpatient evaluation of patients with CKD and/or hypertension in the outpatient clinic and in the dialysis unit. Perform clinic visits in addition to newer models of care including E-consults and Telehealth visits. Occasional support of inpatient consults as needed. Obtain history and physical examination, ordering the appropriate labs for diagnostic evaluation, and determining appropriate management plan in collaboration with the renal physicians. Coordinate and participate in the implementation of clinical practice guidelines as they relate to CKD care and CKD-related complications as well as hypertension management. Provide patient education related to the management and care of the CKD patient. Conduct goals of care discussions for patient with advanced CKD. Oversee referrals to kidney transplantation. Help triage ICVA and interfacility consults to renal service. Provide case management in support of physicians in the outpatient clinic, dialysis unit, and on the inpatient renal consultation service, as needed. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. Alternative work hours, if desired, should be agreed upon at the time of hire. Telework: Not Available. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized.
